Wetness Scale of IOA's Water Rides

Would love to ride these rides but also don't want to be soaking wet and cold afterwards.

If you could rate on a scale of 1-5 where 1 is a light misting and 5 is drenched how would you rate Jurassic Park River Adventure, Dudley Do Right's Ripsaw Falls and Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges

It would also be incredibly helpful if you know of any tips that will help you get less wet sitting in a certain row or seat for example. Thanks!

it is not the water on the rides that get you wet or soak you , it is the people like me that use the water guns that shoot at the riders on that ride .

and i know tha schumi has a good eye and arm and does a beter job than me with those water guns..............

On JP how wet you get varies with how the boat is loaded really. We always ride it several times in a row and at times we have come off bone dry, slightly sprinkled and drenched. We have sat in the front row and been dry and front row and been soaked....same with most rows actually. So there's no "good seat" as weight distribution on the boat determines how wet you'll get.

Popeyes and Dudley........you will be drenched.

Dudley and Popeye .........10 ...Like you jumped in with all your clothes on..Ponchos do nothing and even if they did, there are water cannons that passerbys can fire at the boats...We got completely SOAKED every time we rode

Don't think you are getting wet. Think you are jumping in a pool with your clothes on. Most of the none water rides get you wet to some degree. The actual water rides soak you. Getting people wet is like Universal's signature move. "What type of effect should we use on this ride / show?" "Oh, let's just spray water at them!"

I had read in guide books about how almost everything at Universal got you wet to some degree, and I thought they were exaggerating. Then I went, and sure enough, almost every attraction misted or splashed me to some extent.

The actual water rides soaked us, even wearing x-large rain ponchos didn't help much, especially on the barge ride. That one is the worse with the water coming from all directions. My shirt stayed mostly dry because the poncho blocked the majority of the water from above fairly well as long as I held it tightly around my neck. However, my shorts were another story. It was just impossible to stop all the water coming up from below. It would come in huge waves up through the backs of the seat and up from below. You'd need an airtight hazmat suit to stay dry on that ride.

Best advice is to plant yourself outside the ride exit for a few minutes and see for yourself how soaked the people look who are exiting. Then you can decide if it is a warm enough day to possibly be that wet.

If you do get soaked and just can't stand it, they have large people drying machines you can pay to use to dry off.

Jurassic park I would rate at 2 and definately 5 for the others!! We were soaked squelching round for about an hour after but in all honesty, it was welcome as around 34 degrees on our days visit. The barges was definately the soaker for me

If you go on the water rides, leave wallets and such 1) with a non-rider 2) in a locker (though they are not free at the water rides) or 3) bring a zip bag with a really good seal. I once didn't do this and had quite a job of drying out paper tickets, id's, and money.

I also recommend wearing gym type clothes where possible. They dry quickly, even when it's not so warm.

Haha thanks for all of the tips and insight. I think it's safe to say that if it going to be cold out next week when we visit, that we will be skipping the Ripsaw Falls and the Barges for sure.

We LOVE the Jurassic Park franchise so we may just have to take our chances on that one.

As much as we talk about Popeye and Dudley being extremely wet ride, and make no doubt they are extremely wet rides. If you have the time, I would try to hit them as long as it's not down right cold next week.. They are some of the best examples of their types. Splash Mountain may have the better theming but Dudley still has the better drop even after being reprofiled. Bring a change of clothes "just in case" and go for it.

I'm going in early January and watching to hear about refurbishments so I can hopefully hit each of them at least once.

I've never read of someone here who actually used them. DH did. They are utterly useless if you are wearing cotton. Wearing cotton shorts and shirt, he spent about $10 in a drying machine and it seriously did nothing. It's nice and warm, but it's just not enough. If you're wearing wicking type clothes it would dry you off (except for your underwear, which then leaves super-fun lines under your clothes) nicely, but if you're wearing such clothes would you really pay $5 to stand in a dryer?

Well, if you get soaked on Jurassic, promise us you'll just go back to the other rides and ride them? Please? They are really great rides. To me, they are worth planning for. Worth bringing clothes to change into for the ride then out of, or clothes to just change into after riding. Worth bringing extra under-clothing. Worth bringing flip flops to wear while riding. Very worth it.

They do tend to tone down some of the water effects when it's colder (things like spray jets and waterfalls are either much lower or off on cool days), but even then you will get wet.

Dudley and Popeye are best in class for getting you wet. Theming wise Dudley could be better--its very mixed with some parts amazing (like the drop area), and other parts very plain, but the drop is excellent.

Popeye is the best circular raft rapids ride anywhere.

When the weather is warm, Popeye and Bluto is the wettest ride I've ever done. They actually pour water in the boat! That ride goes out of its way to soak you. Ponchos help somewhat, but you'll still get pretty drenched no matter what.

At least you can keep your bags dry by putting them in the storage area in the middle of the boat. Yes, that actually works. As for the people, this ride is like a spin in the washing machine, or being strapped to a car going through a car wash.

Dudley is only about half as wet as Popeye. Even the drop didn't get me very wet. Do this one after Popeye, because it won't make much difference, you're drenched anyway.

Yep, we like the water rides. We wear our bathing suits under our quick dry clothes and wear flip flops or beach sandals. I wear a waterproof lanyard and we do only the water rides to our fill. Then we go back to the hotel, shower, and return to the parks dry. Have fun. I do not think they heat the water, so it can feel cold on a cooler day.

Just there the week before Thanksgiving. Didn't do Popeye, but did do Jurassic Park and Ripsaw Falls. With a 5 being soaked to the bone, we were about a 3 on Jurassic Park - annoying wet, but not drenched. We did Ripsaw Falls the next day, and we were a 5. Soaked to the bone. We barely got wet on that final drop on Ripsaw that you can view from the bridge - it's one of the first drops inside near the beginning of the ride that splashes up and over you that got us soaked. That was the only part.

Our strategy was to do each ride before heading back to our hotel, RPR. By doing this, we rode the rides late in the day when it was the warmest part of the day, and we just had a quick walk back to our room to change and shower, and then headed back out for the night. Worked out well. Although after Ripsaw Falls, our clothes STILL weren't dry by the next morning! That's how wet they were!

Ditto on Ripsaw. Just put on your poncho and jump in the hotel pool, then you'll be ready LOL. But Jurassic really seemed to only get our faces, so the poncho really might work there. It's worth a try. I just regret not making the effort to do all three on our trip before last (we had driven our car and I didn't want to leave wet--should've taken dry clothes!). Did them all in October and they were a blast. Literally, on Ripsaw. Took a blast from a mister DIRECTLY into my eardrum. Ow. But the kids ran back in line LOL

I would rate Jurassic Park a 5. We got off feeling like we jumped in a pool fully clothed. On the other hand we rate Dudley falls a 1. We barely got misted on that one.

For Blutos you can get an excellent idea of how wet you will get right from your own home. Just go put your shoes and socks on and get in your shower fully clothed for five minutes. Once you are good and soggy from head to toe you will have your answer.

It's not so fun on a cold day and we skip it.. but it's a blast in August!

I was completely soaked on the Jurassic Park ride...I was there in February and was wet the entire day.
