Does anyone have this card? Worth it?

I have a Scotiabank AMEX Gold card - which I love (other than dealing with Scotiabank and/or AMEX) for the insurance included, and I can usually collect enough points to pay the yearly fee.

However, my mother in law is coming with us next year on our Disney vacation and I know she will want to check a bag. We do carry-on only because I'm super cheap and refuse to pay for a bag. I would love to fly Westjet (because I hate the new Rouge planes from Air Canada), but never find flights I want for as cheap as AC.

If you have the WJ card - how does the $99 companion fare work? What would you say you pay per person on average? We always budget $400/person for our flights (YYZ-MCO) including seat selection. I just want to know that it'll be worth it - that we can get flights cheaper than that using the card.

Thanks for your help!

Hi
Mel here
I recently applied and got the RBC West Jet World Elite Mastercard,I usually use Visa so this is new for me.
At the interest rates they have I will not ever run a balance on it.
My Scotia Value Visa is about half the interest rate.
250.00 off my flight and a companion fare for 99.00.
I made my first booking via internet and with a bit of phone help for the Companion flight.

I travel every year and used to be an Air Canada customer.
I got fed up paying for bags (70.00 USD for one bag is expensive) and very poor check in customer service at both Pearson and Orlando airport. Last March they had two people checking in two flights and bag tag machines were empty(no one refilled them).

So off to West Jet I go..........................
Now the whole process to get the card did take way longer than I thought-six weeks but they do post this.
So if the trip is far enough away you will be able to jump on opening up prices ,,if not you will see very high prices and the 250.00 may be just a wash. BUT the 99.00 plus taxes companion flight is great.
You get the companion flight each year as long as you have the card.
here is a site with more info

Hope this helps a bit

Thanks, Mel. The trip isn't until September 2016. We already have our flights for this fall with Air Canada. I wish I had waited for a WestJet seat sale, but I'm too impatient and saw the flights we wanted on sale with Air Canada. Bag fees have never been an issue because we always do carryon only, but with my mother in law coming with us she will need to check a bag - and it would actually be nice to have the excuse to check a bag and not lug everything through both airports! We do online checkin with Air Canada, so we skip their whole process and go straight to security at both Pearson and MCO.

Are WestJet flights typically cheapest when they first open like the US carriers? I always assumed they opened high and you just waited for a sale.

Thanks for the help.

I know this question is about a month old but I'll still answer :)

We have the the WestJet Elite Mastercard and have 2 trips with it now. The $99 companion flight is SO worth it and I love that I rack up WestJet dollars throughout the year. It got me an almost free flight to Edmonton for a funeral last month. I also love being able to check my bags for free. We sort of figure that as long as we use our $99 companion flight every year the card pays for itself (the annual fee is on the high side). It also seems to have pretty good travel insurance included for travel purchases on the card which we enjoy. I'm sure we could get a card that would give us equivalent "money" or points for our spending but we like the little perks on the WJ card.
