Just a quick post for those planning to request a trade on Maui for a future vacation. We just got back from staying a week at the Westin Kaanapali Resort Villas. This resort was awesome. Spotless and well maintained. I will definitely try for this one again some time.

I will get around to writing a trip report and posting pictures later this week.

How far in advance did you request go through (at X months)?

I just got a 2BR lockoff confirmed for this resort for next May... so just over 11 months for me. We used another trader (not DVC) so my total cost is about $400 MF's plus $139 II exchange fee. I am a happy camper :)

I put the request in about 11 or 12 in advance. We said we would take anything during DS's summer break. We probably got a call within 2 or 3 weeks with the match for Memorial Day week.

Also we met another DVC member who was there on II trade too. She had her canvas bag at the beach. So, I guess trades there can happen.

Jim - $539 is a steal for a 2BR. The 2BR goes for a cash rate of over $1,000 per night. Our 1BR would have rented for $900 a night to the public.

What do you think the odds are of getting an II trade to a "tropical" place (i.e. Atlantis, Hawaii, Caribbean, Mexico) at 7-8 months out? DD is suspecting that her boyfriend will propose around Christmas with some hints he's been giving. Chances are pretty good that they would get married next summer (July or August) and we told her we would give her DVC points for a honeymoon. If he proposes in December, that would only give 7-8 months to try to book something.

I would definitely try. It is all based on when someone at Westin turns in the trade. I think other DVC member we met only booked her exchange about 6 months out.

That time scheduled would significantly reduce the chance of success for such an exchange, esp for the Starwood (Atlantis, St. John, Westin), Royal resorts (Cancun) and Marriott (HI, Aruba, St. Thomas, St. Kitt's). It wouldn't hurt to try to you'd need a back up plan. Plus you'd likely have to go ahead and do the air fare early in the course limiting your options even further.

Your news sounds encouraging for us. We put a request with flexibillity for Ka 'anappli 16 months out for Sept 09.I hope we are as lucky as you. Sounds like the westin is all that it is suppose to be. That is our first choice. Thanks for the news.

I'd say your chances for a 1 BR for Sept are very good, a 2 BR would be less so but still possible.

:) Yes... I am quite pleased. We are going with another couple who will pay half.... so my net cost will be $270 for the week!!! We are taking the 1BR side of the lock-off... they get the studio half... so I'll pay the extra buck :rotfl2:

We are going to be in the new building. Have you stayed in both? I had the option for the following week in the original building... but we chose the first week instead. I seriously considered going for 2 weeks... but just could not afford spending the vacation time from work.

I am not sure which is the new building. We stayed in Building 3 I think. It was on the south side - facing the pool. It looked relatively new - so maybe.
