We were near Grand Rapids Friday night and Saturday and on our way home, we heard an "Amber Alert"--someone had abducted his children near Holland and was believed headed west, possibly toward Chicago, in an Astrovan--we were headed southeast toward Toledoo--they said the man was wanted for questioning in an abduction and killing and the children were in in a very dangerous situation even though he is their father, because he is suicidal. It was a 6 year old girl and a 3 year old boy. Anyone know how this ended up?? It's haunting me.

The children and their mother are from here in Central Illinois, Dwight to be specific. Apparently their father failed to return the children to their mother in Dwight, and is currently wanted for questioning in the murder of his girlfriend in Michigan. The mother is (as you can imagine) heartbroken and distraught. He and the kids have been missing for over 1 week. Here's the story from our local paper:

Mom hopes for children's return

Father supected in homicide, kids' abduction

DWIGHT -- The best early Christmas present for Edna Smith would be the safe return of her two young children who vanished along with their father during a nightmare Thanksgiving week.

Missing are Ashley Michelle Gleeson, 5, and Joshua Andrew Gleeson, 3, who were last seen with their father, Patrick Gleeson, of Holland, Mich.

Patrick Gleeson is also being sought on a warrant charging him with the murder of his girlfriend, Dena Lynn Fuglseth, in Holland, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's police in Michigan.

"Last night I found out she had been killed," said Smith, adding she fell apart when she heard the news.

"But you can't cry all the time," said Smith, 33, of 123 1/2 West Waupansie Street, before giving out details Saturday that might help locate her children. "It's hard. I want them home. I need them home.

"Thanksgiving was supposed to be my holiday.

"I've been in an utter panic when he didn't show up since the 25th."

Ashley is 41 inches tall and weighs 39 pounds, and Joshua is 37 inches tall and weighs 39 pounds, she said.

The little girl was last seen by her mother wearing a long-sleeved pink shirt with the word BRAT on it, and blue jeans with paint brush streaks as an artistic effect. She had on white tennis shoes with pictures of four little girls on them.

Joshua was clad in a blueSpider-man shirt, blue jeans and Power Ranger shoes. Both have light brown hair and hazel eyes, their mother said.

Joshua was wearing a Chicago Bulls winter coat with a hood, and her daughter, a hooded red coat of parachute type material with elastic around the waist and blue trim around the pockets.

The girl, who is missing a left front tooth, was carrying a Stuart Little stuffed toy, which is a little mouse in a soccer outfit. Joshua took a toy rubber shark with him, six to eight inches long.

"They're darling -- they look like they could be twins," she said. "They have to be scared to death."

Smith has called information in to 1-800-The-Lost and 1-800-Vanished.

She is hoping that if anybody sees anyone resembling her children or Gleeson, or a van like the one he is suspected to be driving, that they would contact police immediately.

Smith said she and Gleeson never married, but lived together in Gardner, which is northeast of Dwight. She and the children have lived in Dwight about two years."

Suspect may be near Daytona Beach

By Roger Miller

DWIGHT -- Reports surfaced Friday that a man suspected in the abduction of his two Dwight children and the murder of his girlfriend in Michigan was spotted in the Daytona Beach, Fla., area.

Patrick Gleeson, 49, of Holland, Mich., was supposed to return his two children to Dwight on Nov. 25. Gleeson also is suspected of shooting to death his girlfriend on Nov. 22 at their Holland, Mich., home.

The Ottawa County (Mich.) sheriff's department sent detectives to Florida to assist the FBI there.

Gleeson reportedly had been staying in a motel just north of Daytona.

Dwight police are part of a multiagency task force pursuing the case. Dwight Police Chief Tim Henson said an officer was on a plane to Washington, D.C., Friday night to field calls related to the case as part of the "America's Most Wanted" television program. The show airs at 8 p.m. Saturdays on Fox channels, including WYZZ Channel 43.

Gleeson, who has a 1995 blue Ford Aerostar minivan with Illinois license plate CKT 764, was seen Nov. 29 in Lansing on Chicago's southeast edge. Henson said.

Holland (Mich.) Sentinel staff member Nardy Bickel contributed to this report.

Thats just horrible.:( That poor Mother.

This is NOT how I wanted to use my first post back:( , but I thought you should all know how this ended.

The bodies of the 2 children were found in a river 30 miles or so from their home . They had both been shot in the head twice and then dumped into the river. This has been a very difficult time around here. My partner at work has a daughter who works at the daycare where those kids went . The whole town of Dwight has a very somber tone right now. I don't think it will be a very joyous Christmas Seaon for anyone.

I will try to post something a little bit more upbeat about our trip when I get a chance. Right now I just am a little sad.

I had just heard about this. How awful. How could a father do that? What a horrible thing for the mother.

Community eulogizes children

By M.K. Guetersloh
Pontiac bureau chief

DWIGHT -- As family and friends on Saturday remembered happy memories of Ashley and Joshua Gleeson, community members joined in their grief during the funeral at the Dwight United Methodist Church.
A large photo of the two youngsters smiling was placed on an easel behind their flower-draped casket.

"We are here to weep, wonder and worship," said the Rev. Brian Bill of the Pontiac Bible Church, during the children's eulogy. "Many of you are here asking 'Why?' It's natural to try to find reasons for a tragedy such as this."

Fishermen found the body of Joshua Gleeson, 3, at 7 a.m. Dec. 15 in the Des Plaines River near Channahon. The next day, rescue workers found the body of Ashley Gleeson, 5, less than 300 yards away in the river.

The recovery of the children ended a three-week national search for them.

Services for the children on Saturday included the funeral and graveside services at Memorial Park Cemetery in Pontiac.

During the eulogy, Bill talked about how Ashley, a member of the Daisy Girl Scout Troop 585, had memorized the Girl Scout Promise. While she was excited and pleased about her accomplishment, she was also pleased that Joshua knew the promise as well.

Troop co-leader Lisa Taylor shared with the congregation the story of the day the troop members recited the promise.

Taylor explained how Smith was trying to quiet Joshua to let Ashley have her moment. It was Ashley who encouraged her mom to let Joshua recite the promise as well.

Bill said many family members and friends might be consumed with the thought that they might somehow have done something to change the outcome.

"Don't blame yourself," Bill said. "It's not fair, and it's not right."

Their father, Patrick Gleeson of Holland, Mich., failed to return Ashley and Joshua to their mother, Edna "Sue" Smith on Nov. 25. On Nov. 29 police in Michigan found the body of Dena Fuglseth in the cellar of the home she shared with Gleeson.

Gleeson is in custody in Michigan's Ottawa County jail where he is being held without bond in connection with Fuglseth's death.

The Rev. William Leppin talked about how the search for Ashley and Joshua captivated the community, which rallied to support Smith. He commended the officers and Chief Tim Henson from the Dwight Police Department for their efforts.

One woman who also spoke at the service said she had recently moved to Dwight and did not know Smith or her children. The woman explained that she wanted to attend the service as a way of giving comfort to Smith.

"Instead she comforted me," the woman said.
