Hi- new to the board but not new to Disney Cruises....we've been blessed to take one each of the past two years (4 nighters) and we are taking a 7 Night West Carribean in May....

my question is- what excusrions have people taken which they really like??

Key West??

Cozumel??

Grand Cayman???

thanks for the help and if anyone needs suggestions on a 4-nighter please ask....

:welcome: to the boards!! Which May Western are taking? If it's 05-16-09, come join our cruise thread!! http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1655078

Here's what we did 2 years ago:
Coz-Paradise Beach then a donkey buggy ride around the pier shopping area
GC-Cap'n Marvin's 'rays & snorkel tour then shopping and lunch at Breezes
KW-walked around. Also had a Frozen Chocolate-Dipped Key Lime Pie on a stick (aka FKLP on our cruise thread). HEAVEN!!! This time, we're planning a tour of KW via electric car just checking out all the FKLP we can stand!

At Key West, we did the trolley tour (not through DCL). It enabled us to get a good feel for the island while being able to jump on and off to explore.

At Cozumel we really enjoyed Chankanaab and the Dolphin Encounter. The park is beautiful and clean.

Welcome to the Disboards! :thumbsup2

Having done the Western Caribbean 3 times so far, I have a few suggestions:

Grand Cayman - 3 hour Stingray City snorkel tour from Captain Marvins. MUCH better excursion than those sold onboard.

Cozumel - Even though it's not an excursion, I suggest lunch or snack at Pancho's Backyard. The food is great and the Margaritas are incredible!

Enjoy!

any idea how it compares to Swimming w/the Dolphins at the Atlantis??? we did that last year- a bit pricey but well worth it (though I would've like to have spent more time in the water w/the Dolphins!!)

There are many reviews of the regular DCL ports in the DIS DCL FAQ thread at the top of this forum along with lots more information under EXCURSION REVIEWS. Then simply click on the port and the thread will pop up. The first post has the excursions somewhat alphabetical and just click on the marks to read each review. :)

Where is Pancho's Backyard? Thanks

We were on the Western last April and had a wonderful time. We did the following:

Key West - Trolley Tour on our own. You can get off and explore and then hop back on and continue. The Trolley Tour offered by Disney does not allow you to get off/on.

Cozumel - Dolphin Swim. Booked on our own. A wonderful day beautiful grounds. Easy to get to by cab...plenty of cabs at the port and at the park

Grand Cayman - Sting ray swim. Nice ferry ride but my kids (9 & 10) were afraid to get in the water. Managed to convince my daughter to get in for 2 minutes.

Let me know if I can answer any further questions.

thanks for the help...

when you say you booked the Dolphine swim on your own does this mean you went to the same place the DCL goes to but just booked it yourself and got your own transportation???

thanks again....

Key West -- last year, we did the Trolley tour. Like pp's said, you can get on and off as you please. We originally wanted to do the Conch Train, but it doesn't have as many stops as the Trolley, and the biggest issue was that it didn't stop at Southernmost Point... it just slowed down. We also did the Trolley on our own (although you can prepurchase tickets on their website for a slight discount).

This coming year, we are planning to rent an electric car and tour on our own... and of course, stopping at The Blond Giraffe for key lime pie (YUM!)

Grand Cayman -- we've never been there, but I booked the Seven Mile Beach excursion through Disney. Seeing as there isn't as much time in Grand Cayman, and the fact that you have to tender, I felt more comfortable booking through DCL.

Cozumel -- when we went last year (through RCCL) we did the Tulum excursion. I loved it... but it was HOT HOT HOT. But still beautiful and well worth the visit.

This year, I am planning (thanks for the reminder) to book the Dolphin Discovery excursion, but I'm working to book it on my own.

Good luck!

I booked the Dolphin Swim online with Discovery Cove directly. We did the swim which was expensive but fun. Plan to spend the day at Discovery Cove...beautiful grounds. We ate a late breakfast and headed back to the ship for a late lunch.

Here are some video reviews complete with pictures from my husband and I on Western ports.

Key West: Favorite things to do, just explore the town and stop by the Blonde Giraffe for some Key Lime Pie.
