Werewolves - refresh my memory

DS is a werewolf for Halloween. He asked me what a werewolf is & I can't remember the details of the legends.
Also can you recommend any "good" werewolf movies that won't scare the bejebbers out of a 10 year old?

Werewolf, directly translates into Man Wolf. It is a man (or woman) that turns to a Wolf every full moon(also the day before and after) Werewolves are allergic to silver, and are killed with silver bullets. To become a werewolf you must be bitten by a wolf, when they are in wolf form. It is possible to be a werewolf and NOT know it. When you become the wolf, you are gone, you don't remember it, you ARE a wolf.

In literature, the werewolf is usually a very large wolf and not a wolf that walks like a man as portrayed in the movies.

There can be other were-beasts as well.

Teen Wolf does sound like a safe one and even then you may want to screen it first. I don't recall anything scary..just some things may be more "teen" than you would prefer.

Hmm..it's been years since I've seen American Werewolf in London or Silver Bullet

DS(11) is Angel and his friend will be Spike
His other friend who is 10 is going as Oz and his sister who is 12 is going as Willow

Another one might be the old Werewolf movie with Lon Chaney Jr. I remember his werewolf being a sad character and not particularly frightening.

My son is also going to be a werewolf for Halloween....because he saw the movie Teen Wolf and loved it!
