This will be our first time there and we are not big gamblers. DH is going to be a ref in the big APA pool tourney there but will have alot of free time. This is a "vacation" that's wasn't planned so we don't have alot of money, free and cheap are good ;)

what are the "don't miss" things?

what should we do? where should we go? what should we see?? where shoud we eat?? We are going August 19th - 28th.

Thanks!!

Where are you staying?

Free stuff:

Fountains at Bellagio
The flower garden at Bellagio (it's gorgeous)
Volcano eruption at the Mirage
Pirate Show at TI (not sure if it is back up and running--the re-tooled it to make it more 'adult')
Forum Shops at Ceaser's
Walking around the Venetian and just GAWKING

I know there is much much more, and some of the more seasoned Vegas travellers can chime in.

We went for the first time 2 years ago for a friend's wedding and were pleasantly surprised at how much fun we had.

Bring your walking shoes, and don't forget about taking a monorail ride too!!!!

There are loads of fun free things to do in Vegas.
1) Just look around each hotel on the strip. The theaming in a lot of them is stunning to look at. Also look around the shopping malls attached to the hotels, my favourites were the ones at Bellagios, Venetian, the Forum shops (the fountains and statues move and tell Myths every hour or so which is fun) and the ones at the Aladdin (there is a rain and thunder storm in there every hour or so!). You can see the Tigers at MGM and at the Mirage (if they are still there?). I also liked the theaming in the New York, New York and the Luxor (the Tutenkhamun museum there is good too.)
2) On an evening watch the Bellagio dancing fountains and the Pirate battle at Treasure Island.
3) Freemont Street is good to wonder around.
4) Go to the top of the Stratosphere (there is a small charge.)
5) If you can as a treat take a helicopter flight over the Hoover Dam and to the Grand Canyon (it is worth the money.)

As for food the buffets are good and great value for money. We only had one at the Luxor which was recommended to us by a friend who lives near Vegas. The food was excellant and the theaming was great.

If you like rollercoasters the one at New York New York is excellant, but the others along the strip are good too. I also enjoyed going indoor skydiving at the centre just off the strip opposite Circus Circus.

Have a great trip, I can't wait to go back to Vegas one day.

debster812 - we are staying at the Riviera. It wasn't our choice, we are staying were the pool tourney is being held.

Pick up one of those free visitor magazines, and it will list a bunch of free things going on, and also give you tips and coupons.

Be sure to go to the Rio hotel for the show that run over the casino area....It is very good....Take a walk thru NYNY hotel for a real New york city feel....It is amazing. Actually all of the hotels are totally awesome.....I love the gondola boats at the Venetian.
A good cheap buffet is at Orleans hotel.....It is very good food at a very reasonable price. They often have coupons available....
If you have a rental car go to Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charlotte, and be sure to take a tour of Hoover Damn,,,,

Ethel M candy factory!!! Bring back samples!!

Even if you do NOT have a rent car, the hotel can arrange for a bus tour to Red Rock Canyon and the other sights outside of Vegas. I haven't been back since they removed the "family" atmosphere. I'm not really into the "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" idea.

I think it was about $10 you can sign up and ride one of the floats in the sky parade at Rio. The buffet there is awesome too!

THE PARIS HOTEL'S BUFFET BREAKFAST AND THE BLUE MAN GROUP AT LUXOR!!!!!! ::yes::

WOW!!! hope u have fun, i would luv 2 go 2 vegas, i'm a huge gambler, i luv it, i can't wait till i'm old enough, then i'm heading right there, lol!!!!:jester:  pirate: ::yes:: ::yes::

We stayed at the Mirage in march, the new siren's of PI show was pathetic unless you just wanted a giggle, it was soft porn at it's worst!

I really reccomend :

the bellagio fountains
the Forum shops

and if are a Trekker, run to the Hilton for their two attractions !!!

How is the Mirage? Trying to decide between Mirage and Aladdin for Oct trip.

Be prepared for sensory overload...The flaashing lights, the noise, the people everywhere. When we went it was overwhelming until we got used to it.
