Gotta love it when a day doesn't go as planned and even goes opposite of your plan. I was thinking of taking a sick day today since we just got our new batch of sick days for the year. It also would have worked out well since we're doing 4 day work weeks for the summer but this week was a regular work week b/c we had Monday off for the holiday. That would mean I could use just 1 sick day instead of 1.25 days. A coworker emailed last night saying he was taking a personal day today. Another coworker already had today scheduled as a vacation day. That would mean 2 of my 3 backups for the helpdesk would be off today so I ended up going in.
Before I even get to work a coworker asks me if I could sit in on the training sessions this morning for our new voicemail system. Great, there goes my morning and plans of getting anything done. I've been really backed up for the past couple weeks and just haven't had time to work on some things. Now that the helpdesk tickets have slowed down I was really hoping to finish up a couple projects this morning.
Our new voicemail system was being installed at the end of the day today. My coworker who took a personal day was one of the team who was supposed to stay late for the cut-over. I ended up volunteering to stay in his place. So instead of getting to play hooky today I ended up with a 12 hr work day.
As if that wasn't enough, I lost my 3 day weekend. I was supposed to be off on Monday for our flex time. Since it's the first day our employees will be there with the new voicemail system I figured there would be several helpdesk calls about it. So I volunteered to come in Monday and take next Friday as my flex day instead. So the bad news is I only have a 2 day weekend (cut short by working until 8 tonight). The good news is I'll have a 4 day weekend next weekend. But my plan to be there to provide support on Monday was wiped out. I was selected for Jury Duty! I checked online when I got home tonight to find out if I had to report and yup, I do! I was really hoping I wouldn't have to go. I'm so ready for this day to be over!!
