Well that's a bummer, my cousin closed his restaurant...

My aunt just told me on the phone. She was going to go out to eat with a friend and when she pulled up to his restaurant, it was entirely shut down and the sign taken down.

He was a great chef, and was head chef for 13 years of a top ten steakhouse in the country. When the business partner's split, he decided to go his own way. Worked at a couple other places, before he came across a deal of opening up his own place. He had it opened for 2 years, and it generally takes 3 years before a place gets a good foot in the ground.

It makes me kind of sad. I really enjoyed going there. But it also scares me to think of how much he lost in this. If the economy didn't turn so sour after his 2008 opening, maybe it would've taken off. It was getting pretty bad, that he started doing outside work and his wife would run the place.

That is sad, hopefully there will be another opportunity in his future..in the meanwhile I found this and thought of you earlier today seems like a perfect place to put it to make you smile !

Thanks, that is cute.

It's kind of obvious what happened, but at the same time he hasn't talked to my aunt. She said twice she's heard the start of his ring tone calling, but stops a second later.

He's got a great resume, and been cooking all his life. So it shouldn't be too hard for him to get in someplace else. I don't think the restaurant industry has totally caved in Dallas. But this will be a tough one to get out of.

What city was it in?
I think the economy is really affecting the Restaurant industry.

I had lunch at my favorite Greek restaurant yesterday(Thurs)-the owner came around and asked how the food was-it was wonderful

However-there was only a handful of people there-wonder how he stays open
:confused3

Sandra, Try not to worry about your cousin (tell your Aunt that too) who knows what he is feeling, I can only imagine, but I'm sure he'll call when he's ready. Just the fact that she found out by seeing a sign tells me he's not ready to talk about it. Has he got family, or someone he lives with? Does he have some support? Again try not to worry.

I think you are absolutely right.

My parents had dinner with my cousin last month at our favorite Asian fusion restaurant in Louisville, Ya Ching.

Granted, it was a Tuesday night, but the whole time they were there, they were the ONLY ones in the entire restaurant. And the owner, who we know personally and is a wonderful lady, was so grateful they were there that she gave them a complimentary dessert.

This is a downtown restaurant, so I hope there is better lunch business, but it makes you wonder how long they can go on . . .

Best wishes to your family. :grouphug:

Is your aunt his mother? I would be concerned that he didn't tell her what was happening with the business and hasn't been in touch since. I'd do whatever I could to make sure that his family stays in touch during this stressful time. A business failure and ongoing financial challenges can be a bad mix and an easy road to major depression.

He's got a family, 2 little ones (4 and 2yrs old), and a teenage daughter from his first marriage.

My aunt is his mother, and that's her only child. She ate there shortly before her birthday on the 18th, so it's only been closed a week or two. She wasn't going to just hand him over cash for keeping it open, but ate there often to help support it. Every night that we went in there, we'd count the number of guests. And he has to serve like 15 or so people just to break even for staying open the night. He even started doing lunch from 11-2 to add in a few more customers. So it was nice to see more than just a few tables full.

His place was in Dallas (richardson area), called the Rose Tattoo bar and grille, named after a restaurant from a movie and his last name is Rose. He moved from Florida to work for Bob's Steak and Chophouse as the opening head chef. He also was the one to open up the other locations, in Plano, San Fransisco, and Denver. I think it was after the Denver opening, the partner's split and that's when he left.
