Welcome, Foolish Muggles! IoA/US/MK/SW *July 2013 Trip Report Link*

I would have been really freaked trying to out of Mexico and having trouble!

I admit to only 1 pedi in my life as well- but it was awesome! I just always think of what else I could do with the money- like shop :upsidedow.

So glad to hear that your flights worked out. I would have had a hard time sleeping the night before, with that suspense. Nice to have the direct flight too!

I'm too cheap to get regular pedicures, but I do love to get them pre-vacation.

Thanks for posting lots of pictures. It is fun to see the room reviews and the different birds.

The magic of pharmacuticals!

The direct flight was awesome, especially that it was a little later (9:30 flight). The trip home was over 15 hours from resort to our door.

The birds were beautiful. I was excited to see them.

ETA: As soon as I posted the comment above, a banner ad for Detox/Treatment Center showed up on my page.

I would have been freaking out a bit when the boarding pass didn't print. :scared1:
With the snowstorm approaching the resort looks even more like paradise! :rotfl2:

Amanda

For a change, I was actually more freaked out than Mark about the boarding passes. I'm usually all "I'm sure it is all going to work out" but this time, not knowing what the problem was, I was not convinced.

Are you still in the midst of the storm or has it passed? We are still waiting. It is snowing now but not accumulating but I am a little scared about what will happen overnight. I am running a movie night and a dance at the middle school tomorrow and they will be cancelled or postponed if there is no school.

No boarding passes!!?????? That was scary!

I love getting pedis. I can't wait to get one before the April trip. I usually get at least a few over the summer. You should get one more often now. You 'll be hooked.

:scared:

That was not a great way to start our trip!

I really didn't know all of the pampering that is part of a pedicure. I get it! Not sure how often I will treat myself, but I was impressed with the place I went, so who knows.

Honestly, I was more concerned with the flight down. Didn't want anything to delay my vacation! But it was worrisome that it took like 15 minutes and 3 people to clear up whatever the issue was.

I'm glad I scheduled my mani/pedi when I did. We'll see if this will become a pre-trip ritual for me for beach vacations. Maybe.

I am pretty sure they have some sort of tracker. The other day I was searching for camera lenses and then I came here and there were ads for the same exact lenses. And then searched for first communion dresses and low and behold I had ads for dresses as well.

:rotfl2:

I hate when the ads get all creepy and stalkerish!

Me, too!

I'm just surprised the banner didn't come up earlier, when I was promoting my Drink of the Day thread.

It is certainly a pretty impressive and somewhat intrusive tracker!

What did Nate do that STUNNED his family?

On our last visit, Nate spent most of his time with other teens playing water polo, basketball, beach soccer, etc, but he informed us before we went this year that he was doing “nothing” on the trip and we couldn’t make him. As long as he didn’t complain about being bored, it didn’t bother us if he just hung out by the beach or pool, while the three of us were off enjoying ourselves.

Did Nate make good on his promise?

Aside from the pools, ocean and dining, there are a lot of activities available at the resort. Some you have to pay for (jet skis, parasailing, paint your own pottery) but many are included in the price of your stay. There are water sports like kayaking, water bikes (it was never calm enough to try this), sailboarding and Hobie Cats. I’ll post pictures of these when I add some more beach photos.

There’s tennis, a mini-golf course, a pitch and putt, basketball courts, volleyball, lawn and table games. You can go to the activities desk and borrow a basketball, football or soccer ball or take out a board game. Cards are probably available, too, but we brought our own.

There are organized activities like water aerobics, dance lessons and Spanish lessons. Bingo. I was sad that I didn’t see a Trivia tournament this year. I came in second last time - everyone was giving me their points because they didn’t want an obnoxious fellow competitor to win!

Ping Pong

On the day it rained, we decided to play ping pong. While we were at the table, one of the guys who works on the Activities Team came over to squeegee the table. When he was done, he challenged each of us to a round.

We all lost. But I lost the least!

Mini-golf

And there’s Putt-Putt. A really nicely landscaped, but pretty difficult 18 hole mini-golf course. There are lots of bridges, hills, trees and rocks on the course. We did this our first two nights. The first time we didn’t keep score. The second time we played we did and I won! My putting was really great. I put my camera away and since I wasn’t distracted taking photos, I think that helped a lot.

As you can see from these photos, Nate actually did join us in some of the activities.

But what was it that really amazed us???

P1140212-1.jpg

He read!!!

I brought along “The Hobbit” as a backup book. The only book Nate has ever voluntarily picked up on his own, up to this point in his life, was Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Nate spent a lot of the day, in a lounger under the shaded roof
READING!!!

He finished the book and even started Lord of the Rings, which turned out to be kind of awkward, since this was the book Ben was reading. The boys fought over the possession of the book a couple of times, but mostly they were able to work it out.

As the mother of a teenage boy who never ever voluntarily reads, I can certainly see why you were amazed at Nate reading. Hunter hates reading just like his daddy but I could read all day long every day. Love it! I'm looking forward to seeing what other exciting things Nate participated in.

Love the report! As you know, I was so happy departure morning worked out and that you were enjoying the sunshine at Barcelo! And I won't give anything away regarding your Mexican flag shot, but I'm hoping there will be more photos of my favorite drink-that-I've-never-actually-consumed.

Love pedicures. Love them. Wish I lived in a warmer climate and had more time to go. Last one was on the Wonder to Alaska last August, and I went back and forth on the decision to book because I don't want the boys to feel like I'm ditching out on them during a vacation. Anyway, definitely consider it when/if you're on a Disney cruise!

Love your introductions. Even though I've "known" your family for a few years, I really enjoyed reading those!

Now the big new bit of information for me was the part about the WAVES! Waves? I didn't know about the waves! And that photo of Ben in the wave is amazing. When we were at Barcelo a few years ago, it was for a wedding, we stayed at the Palace, half the resort was under construction and our youngest was sick nearly the entire time. So we didn't make it down to the watersports area. Anyway, the waves make a BIG difference to us as we consider our 2014 options!

As always, really looking forward to more!

OMG did you almost cry?? I would have. My DS15 loves to read ( well used to) he always had a book even on vacation.

DS11 on the other hand has never read a book b/c he wanted to. Breaks my heart.

I think I mentioned once that DH took him at midnight for the last Harry Potter that he couldn't wait to get home to read. :)

So we got almost a foot of snow AGAIN!!!! Ugh :(. I am so ready to move to FL. I am so sick of this weather. How bout you?

My son never read either. Despised it. But back when the first Harry Potter movie came out we had the book laying around that he had gotten as a gift (and never read), so I started reading it to both kids at the time to get the prepared for the movie as we all wanted to see it. After 3 nights of reading before bed, Michael asked if he could take the book in his room and read ahead. In 3 nights he finished it. I was so shocked. he had read all the books in the series, and I don't think he read any other books until recently where he wil lread stuff he is interested in now.

It;s funny about bate reading the Hobbit and then going on to Lord of the rings. I think there is almost some sort of magic in the way Tolkin wrote them that it doesn't feel like you are just reading a story, but you are actually following along with the adventure. J.K. Rowling the author of Harry Potter does it quite well to with the Harry Potter sires that is.

I love that he read! I'm a big Hobbit/Lord of the Rings nerd so I'm especially happy that he was reading those books. :thumbsup2

Amanda

Well, all I can say is that looks like the perfect place to read as well as do about 100 other things. So craving a tropical island right now!

All caught up-glad the boarding passes got sorted, love the pics (do I ever NOT love the pics of yours?:rotfl:) and well Nate picking up a book, a big book at that, and reading it all on his own without threats of failed exams!! Priceless-definitely worth the cost of vacation on its own:rotfl2: Barcelo looks gorgeous-wish I was there now instead of rainy Ireland!
Oh and I have only had 2 pedicures in my life-both before going to florida and have to admit I loved looking at my polished toes while lying by the pool, in the sun, feeling warm, sipping a cold drink................
I could so do with being somewhere hot and sunny now-aw well back to reality :lmao:

Loving your trip report!

They have alot of great activities at the resort. Enough to keep everyone happy.

I would of been shocked if my teenager decided to read on vacation too. So cool that you got a photo of it. Funny how the boys ended up fighting over the same book. Too cute!

We were flabbergasted that Nate was reading with enthusiasm!!! Like you, I love to read. I converted my Mark to the joys of reading when we were in high school with the help of Animal Farm and Of Mice and Men.

Glad you are enjoying the report.

We were very relieved when my boarding pass printed.

I sent you some more info on WAVES!!!

Maybe I will share the drink porn chapter next. A few stories go along with that.

Yes, I'm done with the snow, too. At least it is melting quickly. I think we are going to school until June 25 or 26 now!

It is very frustrating when you love to read, but someone you love does not!

Harry Potter is a great series. I like the Percy Jackson (and also Red Pyramid) by Rick Riordon. Hunger Games. And I have read a couple of Disney themed Kingdom Keepers.

The Harry Potter series is magic in more ways than one!

I wish there was more flexibility in school about what the kids can read.

Yup, magic in The Hobbit/LoTR series, too! I started re-reading Hobbit, but I haven't had much time to pick it up since returning home. Did you see the movie? I went with Ben opening weekend. He did the song "That's What Bilbo Baggins Hates" as his audition song for his school play.

I love that he read! I'm a big Hobbit/Lord of the Rings nerd so I'm especially happy that he was reading those books. :thumbsup2

Me too! Me too!!! Ben is going through a bit of a Hobbit/LoTR obsession right now. It could be worse, but I wish he would wear shoes outside!

Well, all I can say is that looks like the perfect place to read as well as do about 100 other things. So craving a tropical island right now!

You are right. It is a great place to read, or participate in activities or do nothing. Or drink! I think that will be up next!

Thanks! Love having you along!

I enjoyed my mani/pedi splurge, but it is getting time to remove the polish. So sad.

Nate's reading will be one of the best memories from this trip.

Yeah, not easy to capture photos of the teen and even harder to take one in a "compromising" position. It's a keeper! Just don't tell him I have it (or that I posted it on the internet)

The resort is just awesome, but you probably have figured out that I feel this way.

UGH! Your experience is exactly why I book all flights direct with the airline these days. Even that isn't perfect but it has lessened issues. That and avoiding airlines that are notorious for changing flight times/cancelling flights etc.

WTG on the Hobbit. I'm spoiled with readers (well, 3 out of 4) but what a great way to "do nothing"

Love pedicures. Haven't had one in forever but...am definitely getting one for Aulani!

Drink porn. You know I'm in!

Yup I saw the movie and can't wait to see the next two, they are going to be epic. I'm just about finished rereading the Hobbit again.

Great update. :)

Love that you "lost the least" at ping pong. It is the little accomplishments that make us proud.

And wow! Nate reading!! Nothing could make a parent prouder than to see siblings arguing about who gets a book. Best fight ever!

My DS15 also LOVES all of Rick Riordan books!!! He did read the first Hunger Games but I don't know if he read the others. ??
