Our trip 3 years in the making from Australia coincides with this week. Am I right in thinking that the park hours that week will be seriously reduced?
Monday 9/26 MHP so park hours 10-6pm? Wednesday 9/28 ditto and Friday 9/30 9-7pm? Tuesday and Thursday appear to be 10-9pm?
Paint the Night appears to be gone too?
Is this consistent with what has happened in previous years?

Yes you are going right when the Halloween parties start so if you're not going to a party you have to leave Disneyland at 6 on Mon and Wed and 7 on Friday.

The future of PTN hasn't been announced yet but it seems as if it won't be running after September 5th.

Wow it pays to be informed hey.
I'm guessing those days will be quieter & as surely day trippers wouldn't pay full price for such a short day?
We will make the most of it, excited to experience Halloween.

I'm a bit confused, September 23 is a Friday this year or are you looking at going to the parks in 2019 (three years from now)?

Assuming you're going this year, it's hard to say at this point what things will be like in late-September. There are MHP slated for Sep 23 (Fri), 26 (Mon), 28 (Wed), and Sep 30 (Fri). Last year saw fairly substantial increases in crowds in the parks due to the 60th anniversary. Looking further back, the parks tended to close early and/or open late in general during the non-peak season. They also tended to open earlier on MHP nights, so the total number of hours were somewhat similar (e.g., DL opened from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm on non-MHP weeknights and from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on MHP weeknights). It's not yet know what this year's schedule will be like. Other than, it seems like Disneyland: Forever is going on hiatus and Fantasy in the Sky will be presented on select nights (probably non-MHP weekend nights). I don't know about day trippers being willing to pay the one-day ticket prices, but don't forget there are also AP holders and guests with multi-day tickets that go during September/October to see HalloweenTime and are also hoping to take advantage of lower weekday crowds (which may or may not happen).

That makes sense, thank you. I have edited the dates now, they were for 2016.

Isn't Sept. 30th the first day of the Gay Days convention? That will bring in crowds, although Oct. 1st and 2nd will be more crowded. And since the 30th is the OP's last day, Gay Days shouldn't have much impact on their visit.

Does anyone know the impact on crowds & wait times for Oct 1st and 2nd due to Gay Days? If you go to the opposite park based on their schedule, should it be less crowded?

Touring plans has DCA at 8/10 on the 1st and DL at 6/10. On the 2nd DCA is at a 6/10 and DL at a 5/10, so either way DCA is predicted to be more crowded. Wait times are scattered with the longest being: 1st DL: Space Mountain at 7 with a wait of 61 minutes and Haunted Mansion at 7 with a wait of 54 minutes.
1st DCA: RSR at 7 with a wait of 72 minutes
Times are similar on the 2nd. Early in the day seems light wait times though. Hope this helps!

I'm not sure what schedule you're looking at, but the website has an 8am opening for 9/26, 9/28, and 9/30 (likely to compensate for the earlier closure due to MHP). Even though you're losing evening hours, if you make Wednesday rope drop, you should have a nice quiet morning since historically Wednesdays are some of the less crowded days, plus an opening that early means rope-drop won't be as crowded as a 10am opening. If you rope-drop, you'll have nine hours in the park before you'd have to leave (although fair warning, those last three hours will be extra crowded with the overlap of day guests and MHP guests).

For non MHP nights, DL evening entertainment is reduced midweek, but WOC will be showing nightly. DCA will be noticeably more more crowded once the Halloween parties start (6pm for 9/26 and 9/28, 7pm for 9/30) and everyone else has to leave DL. PTN parade is no longer showing, although there are rumors it will return seasonally, but unfortunately that doesn't help you next week. Instead, there's a second Soundsational parade on the non-MHP weekends at 7pm along with the"Fantasy in the Sky" fireworks show.

I'd consider rope-dropping DL on the MHP nights and then braving the crowds at DCA for the evening entertainment/atmosphere, and vice-versa on non MHP nights (rope-dropping DCA and then switching to DL for the evening entertainment/atmosphere) -- provided you have park hoppers, of course, which I highly recommend so you can make the most of your time.

No, it won't make those days quieter. You didn't know. There are thousands of others that didn't as well. Or people like me that don't care about the parties. I'll just go to DCA.
