I am getting married in 4 months and am in the process of picking out my songs but I'm a little unsure on a few things with the father/daughter song.

Is the father/daughter song supposed to be how the daughter feels towards her dad or vice versa?

Do you tell your dad what the song is before the wedding or is it supposed to be a surprise ? Or are you supposed to pick it out together?

I'm kind of embarressed to even be asking this question but I really don't know the answer:blush:

I think it all depends on your personal preference. My dad and I danced to Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers. He chose the song since it's his favorite. :goodvibes

I dont think it matters. If he has one great, if not maybe you both find one together. But In my daughter eyes is a great chocie!

In My Daughter's Eyes
by Martina McBride

In my daughter's eyes I am a hero
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
In my daughter's eyes

In my daughter's eyes everyone is equal
Darkness turns to light and the
world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me gives me
strength when I am weak
I find reason to believe
In my daughter's eyes

And when she wraps her hand
around my finger
Oh it puts a smile in my heart
Everything becomes a little clearer
I realize what life is all about

It's hangin' on when your heart
has had enough
It's giving more when you feel like giving up
I've seen the light
It's in my daugter's eyes

In my daughter's eyes I can see the future
A reflection of who I am and what will be
Though she'll grow and someday leave
Maybe raise a family
When I'm gone I hope you see how happy
she made me
For I'll be there
In my daughter's eyes

I agree with all of these..my dad and i were driving somewhere and I loved her first came on the radio--he told me that had to be the song we danced to at my wedding--whenever that may be!

Awesome choices!

Ok, see my tag? I DJ. I have done over 150 weddings in my life. This choice is all about YOU. People used to play Daddy's Little Girl all the time. You rarely hear that anymore. Do what feels right. Of the 3 above, I like the last 2 the best. Give them a listen, or at least go google the lyrics.

Don't make a big deal over this! It will all be JUST FINE! :thumbsup2

It really is a personal preference. When both my sister and I picked songs, they were a surprise to my Dad but they were both songs that had special meanings.
My Sis - Rainbow Connection (MuppetMovie)
Me - You've got a friend in me (Toy Story)

He loved both and are great memories!

I asked my Dad is he had his heart set on the trdaitional "Daddy's Little Girl" he said no so I told him I wanted to pick something else. I picked Celine Dion's Because You Love Me - - it had just come out a few months before - as we danced I told him to listen - we both cried :)

I was a difficult child from day one. As a teenager and young adult I was worse. Sooo many times I let my parents down, I'd ask for something or ask to do something and never follow through with it. Yet - my father was ALWAYS there for me - with a lesson, another chance. I constantly let him down but NOT ONCE did he ever let ME down. I have been married for over 10 years and I still cry when I hear this song :)

"Because You Loved Me"

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful baby
You're the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You're the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You've been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

I always wanted to dance with my father to "Did you ever know if you were my hero" I'm not sure if that is actually the name of the song or not. Congratulations!

My Dad and I danced to Bob Dylan's Forever Young. That was 20 years ago, he picked the song. I rarely hear it now, but whenever I do, I cry. Its been 19 years since my Dad's been gone, but I cherish that memory of our dad/daughter dance. Here's the lyrics:

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

:goodvibes

My Dad actually picked the song we danced to. I was so stressed out over everything and I'd periodically ask him, "Shouldn't we pick out a song to dance to?" And he'd tell me not to worry about it and everything was ok. Well- he surprised me in the wedding with a song that he'd written for me and my husband and he'd recorded it with himself, my Mom, DH's Mom, and DH's Grandma singing it. I immediately burst into tears. Later on in the ceremony, DH surprised me with a song he'd written for me....and I immediately burst into tears again. ;)

All that to say, Daddy and I danced to one of the earlier recordings of the song he wrote for me and DH. It was just my Dad singing and it was so special. My Dad does NOT dance. He promised me when I was 5 years old that he'd dance with me at my wedding. I'm getting all teary again. (There's no happy crying smiley!) :)

I think the Father Daughter dance is a moment to just relax and be with your Dad. Your wedding is over, you're about to be slammed with many many people who are there to share in your joy. But for that one moment, you're still Daddy's little girl.

Ok, I have to stop, I'm going to cry. :p Hope you find a song that's just as meaningful to you and your Dad as mine was to me and my Dad.

The father/daughter dance should be whatever you want it to be. It can be a sappy father to daughter song, a sappy daughter to father song, or just a fun song you both like and want to dance to. Or if there is nothing you feel like dancing with your father to, skip the ritual altogether.

Your wedding is your day. Make it special for you, rather than trying to fill in traditions and rules other people have made up.

My friend hired a band and worked with them and wrote a song with lyrics that he wrote and then he sang and put on a CD for them to dance to at her wedding-it was really sweet, it was the first time she heard it was that day. He just told her that he picked out a song and the DJ knows what to play, when she realized it was him singing she was crying so much! He is her step dad so it was extra sweet. My friend danced to "All I want to do is have some fun" with her father since that was his favorite song.

I just have to put in another vote for Tim McGraw's My Little Girl. I just love this song.

My father and I danced to Unforgettable by Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie.

My father (30 years ago) said that he did NOT, under any circumstances, want to dance to "Daddy's Little Girl."

We danced to Sunrise, Sunset instead.

My dad and I both dislike daddy's little girl. I liked Daddy's hands but he chose Sunrise Sunset and that is what we daned to.

My DH and I heard My Little Girl on the radio the other day. He looked at me and said he wanted to dance with our daughters at their weddings to that song. It was sweet, but I reminded him that they are just one and two, and that between now and their weddings, we'll probably find lots of great songs! It is a fantastic song, though. Makes me a little teary.
