I noticed some recent wedding photos where all the guests stayed seated when the bride and her father walked down the aisle, and wondered if this was customary for all weddings, whether they are civil or in church.

I've been to both civil and church weddings, here in the UK, and it's customary to stand at the beginning and end (when the bride arrives and bride/groom depart) of the ceremony. I've never been to one where we stay seated at those times.

I have been to wedding that stand for the bride and then for the bride and groom like you mentioned. :confused3

Huh. I've never been to one where the guests stayed seated when the bride entered.

I'm trying to remember if people rise when the bride and groom leave, though. It seems like people stay seated and then leave pew by pew starting at the front of the church, following the bride and groom up the aisle to the receiving line.

Recently I've been to some weddings where they've asked everyone to remain seated so everyone can see the bride coming down the aisle so we do.

Around here, people are supposed to do whatever the mother of the bride does when the bride enters - stand if she stands, stay seated if she stays seated.

But I've been to a couple of weddings where the MOB wanted everyone to stay seated so they could see the bride, but some of the other guests stood up, so everyone else did too.
