Wedding Planning Book/Binder Recommendations

Hi Dis Brides. I can finally join the club because DBF proposed last night! Hopefully soon I will be allowed to post pics of my ring.

We went to Borders today and I was shocked at the number of books in the wedding planning section. Can you recommend some good books and planning binders? Weddings are expensive enough without wasting money on useless books.

No date yet, and no location. We will either be having a Disney Wedding in FL or a Disney-themed wedding here in IL with a Disney honeymoon. I'm so overwhelmed!

First off Congratulations!!! Second, IMHO those books were not helpful when it comes to a Disney wedding. If you're having one at home that's a different story. I bought one of them, it was a purple binder, the Complete Wedding Planner/organizer and it had a lot of pages for different vendors and what not. But honestley for a Disney wedding, the passporters book has been my go to book for info, as well as for planning my budget and what I need to get for a Disney wedding. agreed. if you do a DFTW, there is stuff you need to keep track of, but so much is included it idn't make sense for us to buy a binder though i did look. mostly, i had a couple of folders on my computer i saved pictures to, a bookmark list for things i found online, my PJ on here and then i did buy several books too. but definitely the passporter guide is going to be the biggest help!

yup! I agree with everyone here When I got engaged i went out that very night and got some big binder thing that I dont need, a few books and like 5 bride magazines.... yes, i was VERY excited lol

But with a Disney wedding, you won't really need the big binder thing. When Disney sends you the planning kit they kind of think of everything.

What I ended up doing is buying my OWN binder, getting some hold punched page protectors and ive stuck EVERYTHING in there. I'd be lost without it. I've printed out emails from our planner, pictures of stuff i like, fabric swatches of the colors of dresses, our contracts, a copy of the planning kits, menus, invites lists... reservations, confirmations numbers and so on... with this option I can be as organized as I want since not everything those already made binders has- applies to me!

Good luck! Planning can be VERY stressful, but from what I hear, is TOTALLY worth it <3

That's exactly what I'm doing. I'm having an Escape wedding, so there isn't as much stuff to keep up with. I have the escape section of the passporters printed out and in there, plus anything else pertaining to our Disney wedding. I also keep a spiral notebook with it to just make random notes whenever I think of something I need to do. The DF says all the pages say the same thing, just different wording! What can I say?! I'm a list maker who never really completes the tasks on the list!

I agree with the posts above, the books really don't apply to a DFTW. I did get a few books from The Knot (honestly haven't really used them).

I did start my own binder. I got a ton of information from DFTW (pricing, venues, options, photography info, etc.) which I just hole punched and put into the binder. It helps keep everything organized. I also printed out the Passporters Guide and also put that into the binder. I just used dividers to separate the different areas. Another great thing about doing your own binder is that you can customize it to you. Decorate it the way you want. All the sheets that the binders in the book store come with (budget sheets, guest lists, vendor information, etc.) can be found online and printed out.

When I first got engaged I was given Mindy Weiss's "The Wedding Book" as a gift, and I have found it to be a useful reference. I use it as a guide for the traditional structure of weddings, but she also talks a lot about ways you can stray from that and make your wedding more "you".

Obviously not everything applies to a Disney wedding, but you still need to shop for a dress, pick or create invitations, maybe interview a couple vendors, etc.

as for books, i bought a few... heh... i also enjoyed perusing the library for different titles and that kept me from buying crazy books that weren't really something i needed anyway. i actually used the weddings for dummies book (cause apparently i really knew nothing about wedding "protocol"), the passporter guide of course, offbeat bride (more for emotional support). lots of the wedding magazines, ok, EVERY wedding mag has about the same timelines and calenders in them. real simple magazine does a yearly wedding big magazine that i saved and martha's quarterly magazines are nice wish books....

YAY!!! Congrats to you and your DF!!! I would agree with the ladies above. The Passporter's Disney Wedding and Honeymoon's Guide Book is the best! I learned a lot and it helped me with some questions during my PS that I would have never thought to ask.

I 100% recommend Mindy Weiss's wedding book too!!! I sat in B&N and went through tons of books and reviewed them all on line and am so glad I purchased that one. While the Passporter's guide is essential for a Disney wedding, the Mindy Weiss book really helped with a lot of little extras and ettiquette questions.
