Just got word that my nephew is getting married at the St. Regis Resort at Monarch Beach Ca. Starting to look into RCI trades around there, nothing really gets me excited. The only resort that sounds ok is the Capistrano Surfside Inn. Then again just 40 minutes up Rt 5 is Disneyland. Thinking about staying at the Grand Californian so the kids and me :) can see Disneyland for the first time. What do my fellow DISers think.....stay close to the wedding or make it a true Disney trip?

Why not do both?

Stay near the wedding for a couple of days to take part in all the wedding events and see family and friends, then move up to the Grand Cal for a few days to do Disneyland.

As a SoCal resident, I think the DLR resorts/hotels would be a fine base for the wedding. You already understand that the wedding will be ~40 minutes drive in "best case" traffic. Give yourself plenty of extra margin if driving during morning/afternoon commute. (If the wedding is a Friday afternoon/early evening -- you might want to triple the drivetime estimate.)

10 letters......Disneyland! Seriously is there even a choice here? :) You will love the Grand Californian (if you can get in on points) and Disneyland is where it all started.

When is the wedding? It's very difficult to get a VGC reservation under 7 months. You can use points for any of the 3 DL hotels but they are very high.

Early September wedding....hopefully a slow time at the parks.

Early September is slower...but rates are high and VGC are limited in number of rooms you can get at this short a notice. Although if you get into VGC you also get a special gate passage into the park early in the morning for hotel guests only. It comes out near Soarin...if you are a fan and the rooms are amazing. Stayed there before they designated rooms for DVC and was amazed at the property. Good luck getting the ressie.
