After spending an exhuasting afternoon hitting just about every department store at the mall, I'm still no closer to finding a dress to wear to my friend's wedding.

I already have the perfect one in my closet ... but I wasn't sure if I should wear it because it's ivory. Is it okay to wear something that close to white?

Any etiquette experts out there? Thanks!!

No ivory. The bride's dress could be ivory. Even if it's not, it's still too close to white.

I second the no ivory. It is the bride's day to be a standout in ivory or white.

I just went to a wedding where the colors were ivory, champaign and brown. The flower girl wore ivory and the bride's maids wore ivory and brown. Who knows what is appropriate anymore.

Thanks for the quick replies. I suspected as much...which is why I spent the day at the mall, looking for another dress. But I figured it couldn't hurt to confirm my "gut instinct".

Sigh... Guess I'll hit some different stores tomorrow! LOL!!

Thanks again! :)

I have mixed feelings about this. Initially I was going to say go ahead and wear it. Then I remembered the dress a friend bought to wear to a wedding a few yrs ago. It was Ivory lace, almost full length and really looked like a wedding dress IMHO.

I guess it really depends on what the dress looks like, and if it is possible to add accessories, a jacket/shawl etc in another color.

No ivory. Kara, where are you in NJ? Maybe we can help hunt down a store. Also, is this semi-formal or black tie?

Kara,

Have you tried Loehmann's?

My MIL wore ivory to my wedding, after I asked her to pick any color she wanted except white or ivory. I'll never forget she did it either.

Good luck in your search, and good for you for recognizing ivory's a no-no at a wedding.

That is just so wrong :(

For my niece's wedding last year,I found a great cocktail dress at Ann Taylor on sale for $19.99 (from well over $100)--and this was at the store, not the outlet! I would never have stepped foot in the store if a friend hadn't brought me--I never shop there.

I would not wear white or ivory to a wedding.

I'll bet the two of you are best of friends now though. ;)

I was just looking at my wedding photos and realized that my DH step mom wore her ivory lace wedding dress to our wedding. I was so busy with other things I didnt care.
I would say no to the Ivory dress unless it has a print or something like that on it. I find this a funny tradition though.

My grandmother bought an ivory pantsuit to wear to my wedding. That's what happens when you send your grandmother, who hasn't attended a wedding in 20+ years, shopping with your mother, who has dementia, and doesn't remember any of the "rules." Oh well. Both were mortified when they realized and returned it and found something else. I wouldn't ever have said anything though...my dad did.

Definitely don't wear it-the bride may not notice but other people will. If nothing else, you could look for a simple black skirt with a pretty shirt. I've done that for the nothing to wear weddings before.

Yep, uh huh, sure we are.

She claims to this day that it was light yellow (NOT!) and since she didn't want any pictures of the wedding, she has nothing to jog her memory

Not sure where you are in NJ, but if you are near a Boscovs, they sometimes have nice things to wear--i got a dress for the cruise i just went on and i am wearing that for a wedding!

I agree - no white or ivory - but there have been threads on this in the past where people said it didn't matter. My SIL wore white to my winter wedding. I'm not one to care about etiquette, but I definately noticed and thought it was odd.
