We need to buy a new freestanding range, what do you suggest?

Hi everyone. We are going out tomorrow to buy a new range. Our old one (8 years old) has had the electric control panel go out, it's right at $300 to fix, which seems pointless on an 8 year old range that was only $500 to begin with.

I don't need a fancy one, I'm not a huge cook. But I do want self cleaning and smooth top. We'd like to keep the price under $600. Eventually I want to gut my kitchen and get everything brand new, and I figure I'll buy a nice, expensive, stainless steel one then (I'm just looking at white now, since all my other appliances are white).

So, are there certain brands people recommend? Right now I'm looking at GE and Kenmore (our old one was a Kenmore). There are quite a few Fridgidaire (sp?) in my price range, but I have no idea if Fridgidaire is any good or not.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Only thing I can tell you is I wish we didn't get the smooth top one we did. It's black and very hard to keep clean. I would go with the gray if I did it again.
What I do like about it is that it's a convection oven and makes things like turkey or a big roast much faster. :thumbsup2
