we might have to cancel

We have plans to go to the world in September for free dining. We have planning our days with the kids for a while and they are all excited. Now DH might be out of work in August!:scared1: I am afraid we will be hurting ourselves if we take this trip. We also have friends going during the same time and I hate to disappoint everyone. Would you cancel or make it shorter & cheaper. We could down grade from deluxe dining and stay a day or two less. What would you all do?:confused3

My hubbie was made redundent in April and we have three weeks booked for August some at Disney and some in villa and some in St Augustine and Savannah , but we have decided to go ahead as we would have lost the flight money as the tickets was none refundable, we had saved the money so we decided to go for it as it might be the last time.

Depends on whether this trip is completely paid for (not on credit cards) AND how much money you have in emergency savings.

If you don't have enough in savings to tide you through a period of unemployment then there is no question that I would cancel. Spending money on a vacation and then wondering where you'll find the money to cover an unemployment shortfall is not a good thing.

If you've already purchased your airfare I would go and for the amount of time you've already booked. If you have to change your airfare you would most likely incur a change fee. I would downgrade to a value resort (if you're not staying in one already), downgrade the dining and downgrade the tickets and have every other day be a resort day. We did the basic dining plan and found there's plenty of food. We used our snack credits for breakfast. I know there was a thread about cheap/free things to do at WDW that had some great ideas.

I am in your shoes(sorta) I am still waiting to see if I have to cancel our trip this month due to my broken foot.
I would not make any quick decisions now, other than I do not think you need deluxe dining. You have until 45 days before to cancel w/o a penalty. Could you wait until then? Do you already have airfare?
I know it is hard telling kids we might not go. It would be really hot in August anyway ( trying to put a positive spin on it). I just told my kids we have to wait and see how my foot is when the cast is off. I still have my reservations which are room only and a refundable package with Sea World.
I found that after I had to cancel our WDW package, it was easier to book everything that could be cancelled 72 hours ahead in case we don't go.

I suppose it depends on your situation, we won't be changing our pland as everything is in place.

We are in about the same situation, my dw got laid off last month, and I got laid off last week. The layoff news came exactly 44 days before our trip, so penalties came into play. We decided to go ahead with the trip as planned since we were going to lose airfare and fees anyway (totaling about 1/3 of the total price). Fortunately, we had plenty of time to prepare for lack of work, and the trip was already paid for. If I could have gotten a return on airfare though, we probably won't be going (just in case).

OP, you still have over 3 months. Don't rush to cancel yet.

According to mousesavers.com: "You can change or cancel your reservation without penalty up until 45 days in advance. From 6 to 44 days in advance, there is a cancellation fee of $100. If you cancel 5 days or less in advance, you pay a $200 penalty." So you can wait until pretty much the last minute, and then decide.

If your husband does lose his job, cancel. Disney will still be there next year or the year after, when you're back on your feet.
