We bought into DVC in December of 2005 not knowing about the “buy where you want to stay” rule. Prior to DVC we liked to resort hop and try many different hotels. We thought we would be able to do this with DVC. Its not that we didn’t like SSR, because we did – very much – but we also wanted to try the other resorts. This worked out okay for us in January of 2007; our first trip. We spent a week at SSR, which we loved and then moved to the Beach Club Villas for a week, which we also loved. We had reserved BCV at the 7 month mark and didn’t have a problem.

At just under 6 months out we decided that our next trip would be the end of October 2007. When I called to book we only had two choices, SSR and Old Key West. We chose OKW since we hadn’t been there yet. The comments on these boards made me really anxious about our OKW decision. I even called once to try and change to SSR and it was booked already. So when we checked in on Monday October 22nd I had tried to lower my expectation.

Boy was that unnecessary. OKW was fabulous, from the moment I stepped in the lobby I felt welcome and relaxed. I needed a room in a building with an elevator or on the ground floor because I had a scooter so we checked in early in the morning just to assure they’d have a better ability to meet my needs (I had of course had it noted as well). The “earning their ears” CM was sweet as he was being trained to check people in. He got us our keys and his trainer assured me we had a great room. She was right. That afternoon we were assigned room 1415, a ground floor one-bedroom just across from the HH.

The room was HUGE compared to the other resorts and the atmosphere was so relaxing. Our balcony faced part of the golf course and a nice grove of greenery. The room was spotlessly clean. Nothing was broken or appeared in need of maintenance. In fact, one of the light bulbs burned out in the back bathroom fixture as I was getting ready for dinner one evening. I called maintenance and reported the problem so it wouldn’t go unfixed for the next member, and it was fixed when we returned from dinner that evening.

The furniture and bed was very comfortable and the dining table was the perfect place for me (an online graduate student who had to continue to “go to school”) to do homework. The lighting was good. The bath tub was heavenly. The shower was nice and big. The grounds were clean and so well themed. We loved the boat ride to, and especially home in the dark, from Down Town Disney. We had breakfast at Olivia’s and it was good solid breakfast fare. We really had absolutely no issues with the room or the resort.

Everyone always says, “no one comes to these boards to say there were no problems” and I think that is sad. So I just wanted you all to know how much we enjoyed OKW and how wonderful of a resort we felt it was.

Thanks for sharing your impressions, and glad you had a wonderful time at OKW.

I think you learned one important thing....never take individual posts on this or any internet forum as something that you can globalize. People need to realize that human nature is to tend to report bad news and others pile on to negative comments.

Your post is a really good one, but since there is very little controversy it probably won't stay around much.

Maybe we can fixate on that burned out light bulb! :teeth:

Sounds like a really nice trip to give you a new venue for your school work. Thanks for taking the time to share your impressions. :)

Very nice report! It sounds like you had a wonderful trip. And it's so nice to read a report where someone has a good experience.

Thanks for reporting what we have known for years!:thumbsup2

Count us as OKW fans even though our home is SSR.

When we took our trip this summer, we visited friends that were staying in OKW. They've owned OKW for over 10 years and love it. We were so impressed with their 2 bdrm overlooking the golf course and a short walk to the HH. We ended up having dinner at Olivia's...a wonderful meal, wonderful service and nice surroundings.

So glad to hear you enjoyed OKW. It's a wonderfully relaxing place to be -- and after a day in the parks we need that!

I am just curious - after his experience did you or are you thinking about trading - selling SSR and buying OKW?

I am thinking about it as we LOVE OKW.

OKW is gorgeous. We had friends come down to hang out with us at disney, and we booked them at OKW. This was our first trip and it was the first resort we saw in person before we checked our selves in at Saratoga. We all thought it was sooooo gorgeous. Our friends were really impressed with us!:thumbsup2

My gf has been trying to get us to buy OKW resale for years, but we just weren't financially able to. BUT when we walked around SSR, for our extended family, we knew SSR was the place. Our DDs like the location and the facilities and since they will enjoy the last half of the contract, we'll keep SSR. We WERE considering adding on OKW for ourselves but then they announced GCV and Ko' Olina, we'll probably add on there instead.

In a perfect world, where my DDs were out of college and we had more disposable funds, we would add on OKW points as well as GCV and Ko' Olina<G>.

You have another vote for OKW here. It is our home resort and our whole family loves it!!

:goodvibes :goodvibes

Glad you liked it. We stayed at OKW on our first ever trip in December after becoming members in May and loved it. We loved everything about it but most of all it's relaxed atmosphere after a busy day in a park.

My DD picked OKW for her college graduation trip last January, and DH and I will be in a 1 BR there over President's week. Your lovely post enhances anticipation. Thanks for the :tink:

Great report and thanks for reasuring me that indeed own at the best DVC resort.:woohoo:

If not staying at BWV, OKW is the best.

Thanks for the great report and for taking the time to share some good news. OKW has been our "home away from home" for over ten years and truly love everything about it!! We're glad that you enjoyed your stay.

OKW is our home resort - and we love it - - six weeks every year in our home away from home!! For all who write the glowing reports about the CM's at the other DVC resorts - - - - keep in mind - - - they were all trained at OKW originally - and there is a reason for that. We are the original - one and only DVC until SSR. And we trained all of the CM's for SSR.
