We bought into DVC in December of 2005 not knowing about the buy where you want to stay rule. Prior to DVC we liked to resort hop and try many different hotels. We thought we would be able to do this with DVC. Its not that we didnt like SSR, because we did very much but we also wanted to try the other resorts. This worked out okay for us in January of 2007; our first trip. We spent a week at SSR, which we loved and then moved to the Beach Club Villas for a week, which we also loved. We had reserved BCV at the 7 month mark and didnt have a problem.
At just under 6 months out we decided that our next trip would be the end of October 2007. When I called to book we only had two choices, SSR and Old Key West. We chose OKW since we hadnt been there yet. The comments on these boards made me really anxious about our OKW decision. I even called once to try and change to SSR and it was booked already. So when we checked in on Monday October 22nd I had tried to lower my expectation.
Boy was that unnecessary. OKW was fabulous, from the moment I stepped in the lobby I felt welcome and relaxed. I needed a room in a building with an elevator or on the ground floor because I had a scooter so we checked in early in the morning just to assure theyd have a better ability to meet my needs (I had of course had it noted as well). The earning their ears CM was sweet as he was being trained to check people in. He got us our keys and his trainer assured me we had a great room. She was right. That afternoon we were assigned room 1415, a ground floor one-bedroom just across from the HH.
The room was HUGE compared to the other resorts and the atmosphere was so relaxing. Our balcony faced part of the golf course and a nice grove of greenery. The room was spotlessly clean. Nothing was broken or appeared in need of maintenance. In fact, one of the light bulbs burned out in the back bathroom fixture as I was getting ready for dinner one evening. I called maintenance and reported the problem so it wouldnt go unfixed for the next member, and it was fixed when we returned from dinner that evening.
The furniture and bed was very comfortable and the dining table was the perfect place for me (an online graduate student who had to continue to go to school) to do homework. The lighting was good. The bath tub was heavenly. The shower was nice and big. The grounds were clean and so well themed. We loved the boat ride to, and especially home in the dark, from Down Town Disney. We had breakfast at Olivias and it was good solid breakfast fare. We really had absolutely no issues with the room or the resort.
Everyone always says, no one comes to these boards to say there were no problems and I think that is sad. So I just wanted you all to know how much we enjoyed OKW and how wonderful of a resort we felt it was.
