We have a 3 hour layover in Alanta but I just got on Airtran website and they have 2 other flights to Orlando leaving earlier than ours. Has anyone every try to fly standby on an earlier flight? How does this work?

I have not but I just want to remind you of the check in with airtran coming back home.
When you get to your hotel and in your room you need to call 1-407-284-1231 to pay for your bag fee when you go home. But if you upgrade to first class (39.00) if you are a A+ member you will not have to pay for the bag fee.
Plus, 24 hours before you leave you will have to do the check in your self by calling AirTran, Disney will only check you in for reg.seats and tell you when you need to be ready to go back to the airport.
I hope this helps

Have you checked AirTran's website for their standby policy? Keep in mind even if it's possible - the earlier flight/s may not have room for your full party. You would need to be prepared to either (a) split up between flights or (b) not be able to sit together or (c) waste time at the airport until your scheduled flight if you can't be accommodated via standby. Or a combination of any/all these.

It seems the OP is actually looking at two earlier flights out of Atlanta to MCO that are leaving earlier than theirs. If this is the case, they will already be in Atlanta for 3 hours. It is best for them to check with the gate agent in Atlanta for those other flights to see about flying standby.

Yes, exactly

AirTran allows standbys, but you should either have all carry-ons or plan to have ME deliver your checked bags to your WDW resort. If you are planning to claim your own luggage, you can't be sure which of the flights the luggage will be on (most likely the one you booked)!

Yes I have done it may of times. What I do is call the airline the day before to see if there are any seats available and what my chances are of flying stand by. I have never had an issue doing this. Especially since you said there are 2 earlier flights.
So good luck you should not have an issue!

Can you not pay at the airport? I am planning on checking my own luggage in, is that possible? I am not using the ME luggage tags.

I am traveling with my DD 10 we would need seats together, I know this makes it harder but is it still do able?

I had a 2 1/2 hour layover in Atlanta on Airtran in May. My luggage got to Orlando before I did, they put it on an earlier flight. When we got to the luggage area our bags were set off to the side and we got ours before they even started coming off our flight.
