Got back late last night from our whirlwind trip to WDW. We (DH, me, DD17, DD7) were on the DxDP, and had some ADRs and the rest we "played by ear". When considering the menu prices, we came out ahead on meals, but we left WDW with several snack options still left on our card. Here's a quick review (my opinion) of our meals:

Day 1: LUNCH -- QS lunch at Lotus Blossom Cafe (China in Epcot): I had sesame chicken salad - it was ok, dressing was good. DD17 had orange chicken - liked it. DD7 had sweet & sour chicken - it was ok. The ginger ice cream was good. DH wasn't hungry.

DINNER -- Had ADRs at Kona, but got caught in torrential downpour and got soaked. Had to go back to resort to change clothes and it was too late to make ADR, so we got salad (build your own) and roast beef & blue cheese sandwiches at Beach Club Marketplace in resort. Also, got bean soup! Everything was great!

Day 2: BREAKFAST: Character Dining at Cape May (Minnie Mouse, Goofy & Donald Duck). Good buffet choices including Mickey waffles and grilled asparagus. We liked it...went back another day.

LUNCH: Akershus with the Princesses -- loved it! Lots of princesses (Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Arielle, Cinderella) and quite good food. DH and DD17 loved the mushroom ravioli, and I had the local dish (kotkakke??), which is similar to swedish meatballs...pretty good. The appetizers are buffet style and very good....herring, salmon, meats & cheeses, salad, good bread.

DINNER: California Grill - FABULOUS! Everything from the view, our waiter (Ryan) and the food was amazing! DH had the Bison which was absolutely the best steak at Disney! I had the beef filet, also very very good! DD17 had the pork tenderloin which was super! DD7 had the kids salmon and loved it!!! Our appetizers were also great - DD17 had the cheese board which was the most memorable. I had the crab stuffed lotus flowers which were also quite tasty. Don't recall what DH had, but it was ALL great. Desserts were equally fabulous! HANDS DOWN OUR BEST MEAL OF THE TRIP!

Day 3: DD7 and me on our own (DH and DD17 at Volleyball Nationals) --Quick, late breaky at Beach Club marketplace. She had french toast sticks which were really yummy! Better than my ham & cheese croissant, which was just ok.

Dinner : DDs had CS meal somewhere in DHS. Burgers, fries, chicken nuggets. They liked it -- and the Chipmunks showed up to dance with them. DH and I had LeCellier -- yummy! I had the LeCellier filet which was very good and DH had the salmon, also very good. The cheddar cheese soup was great, too. Chocolate whiskey cake for dessert was fantastic! PROBABLY SECOND BEST DINNER OF TRIP.

Day 4: Character breakfast at Cape May again -- still good.
Lunch: don't remember -- maybe just snacks.
Dinner: Seafood buffet/clam bake at Cape May - YUM YUM!! Great crab legs! Also great clams, mussels, mahi-mahi, and all the fixins. DD7 loved the corn on the cob, mac & cheese and chicken nuggets, too!

Day 5: Lunch at Tusker House - VERY GOOD! Lots of choices for non-adventurous folks as well. But I loved all the african/mediterranean fare! YUMMO!
DINNER at Artist Point: This was the disappointment meal of the trip. After all the great reviews and hoo-hah, I really was excited about this one! The atmosphere is nice and pretty and we had a good table at the window overlooking the waterfall. Our waiter was nice, but not particularly efficient. The food, with the exception of the mushroom soup and house bread, was just mediocre. I had the buffalo/bison strip which was bland and somewhat tough (didn't even come close to comparing to DH's at Cali Grill!). DH had the salmon, which he said was very good, but not spectacular, and certainly not as good as what I cook at home! DD17 had scallops which were very good. The soup was OUTSTANDING, and I'd go back for lunch just for the soup. The basket of bread was also great. However, for a 2-meal table service, I definitely wouldn't do this one again. In my opinion, Artist Point has no business counting as a 2 meal restaurant or signature dining experience. Again, the resort/surroundings were lovely....the food just fair.

Last day: BREAKY at Hollywood & Vine - good buffet breaky.
LUNCH at Beaches & Cream -- yummy burgers, most excellent onion rings and ice cream!

So, there ya have it. Just my opinions, of course. I would say that a "must-do" would be Cali Grill, and a "should do" is LeCellier. I wouldn't go back to Artist Point, except for soup & bread.

Thank you for posting this review. I was contemplating whether to eat at Artist point or not. I think I will skip it for this trip because the menu is rather weak. My family's favorite has always been California Grill as well. We are returning there in August. How's the crab/lotus flower thingy in CG? :confused3 What is it like?

Think jalapeno poppers, minus the jalapeno...and cheese. The lotus flower is filled with crab, then dipped in a light batter of some sort and quickly deep-fried. But it's not greasy or heavy. Very light and tasty. Comes with 3 on a plate with a nice dipping sauce that has a little kick to it. Good without the dipping sauce, too.

Cali Grille was definitely our favorite! If you can get Ryan as your waiter, he's fabulous! He really yucked it up with our kids and made a big deal of my DH's BIG 5-0! And the fireworks were great from either inside or out on the observation deck.

Great reviews. Looks like you had a wonderful time. Sorry you missed out on Kona. It's one of our favs. (Our current fav. TS is Wolfgang Pucks-ate there 3 times last year in 11 days)

thanks for the review. We are trying Cape May dinner for first time and I'm glad you liked it. I'm going back and forth with Artist Point b/c I have been reading good review but I can't seem to find a good night to fit in our schedule and Im glad to read your reveiw b/c I don't have to stress to fit in our schedule. So many places to eat so little time.

Oh, please tell me more about Wolfgang Pucks!!!! :goodvibes

Nicksmom-Thanks for the reviews! I am practically salivating while reading your reviews of the California Grill. Unfortunately, this time we are just doing the DDP, so it's not happening. Sorry I budded in on your thread. I am still earning my ears, and don't even know if I comitted a faux pas.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed California Grill! We're going there in September and are super excited!

I'm really surprised you ended up saving money with all of the CS you did! I'm glad, though. It shows you that DXDDP can save you $$ even if you have some CS meals.

I am really disappointed to read about AP! I was looking forward to that meal! Now I have to rethink. Maybe we should just go to Calif Grill twice? We already had a reservation for our first night, then my husband is meeting us (my mom and kids) on the 4th night.

Thanks for the reviews!

You're quite welcome, mefordis! I would DEFINITELY choose Cali Grill twice over eating at Artist Point. I was so bummed because, like you, I was really looking forward to it. But it was just so NOT worth using 2TS meal credits! I would however, go get a bowl of their soup...really! It's amazing! I don't know if you can just pay OOP for soup for lunch one day, but definitely worth it if that's an option for you.

As far as "saving" money....well, I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Did our meals total more $$$ than we paid for DxDP? Yep, sure did....well over! But when you consider the prices for things, I wouldn't say we really saved any money. I mean, really....our meal at Cali Grill was very, very nice. But it would be a stretch to say that it was really a $250 meal. We didn't even have cocktails or wine with dinner! So, you feel like you're "saving" because you see this bill for big $$$ and don't have to hand over any money (except for tips -- which really add up!!!!), but 2 steaks, pork tenderloin, and a tiny piece of salmon does really not add up to $250. And a breakfast buffet for 2 adults and a 7 year old really does not cost $65...y'know? But the inflated prices at Disney makes us with the dining plan really feel like we're "saving".

But I digress....go have fun, and EAT! Do Cali Grill....twice if you have to. Or find another ADR to fill that Artist Point spot. LeCellier was very good too, and even though they were "fully booked", they took walk-ups when we were there. I'm sad we missed Kona, and lots of folks really like it. Same with Jiko. I'd try one of those if I had the chance to.

great reviews, thanks. Easy to read, with good amount of detail. :thumbsup2

Sorry to hear about Artist Point...probably won't do that one, though. Was kind of leaning against it because not that interested in buffalo steaks (we live in Nebraska...they have herds of those things around here & even the state parks serves "beef"alo, lol.) and the grilled salmon...well, we do a mean grilled salmon at home (better than most restaurant versions) so we don't usually order it at restaurants anyway. If that's the two main menu specialities, it'd be a total waste for us.

Did you buy some snack items to take home to use up credits?

Okay, I changed my reservation to Kona! I'm just going on your review alone but you sound so convincing! I'm sure I won't regret it! My mom isn't a big meat eater anyway and it looks like a meaty place. Lots of game.

I am so hungry all the time because I am trying to lose weight so here I am making all of these reservations and I KNOW once I get there it will be sooo hot I won't want to eat!! Ha!

To save $$, I am thinking of getting the DXDDP for 2 adults and once my husband comes I'll let him use my credits. I'll just nibble off of other people's plates and order my own small appetizer. We are getting 2 connecting rooms, my mom is on one reservation and me and my husband and two kids on the other. I won't get the dining plan for my mom's room, just my husband and my room. Do you think that will work?

Thank you for the reviews! :)

It was sooooo dang hot....we really could've done the regular dining plan, I think. We mostly ate 2 meals a day and a snack or two. They serve a lot of food for the adult meals. The kids meals (3-9 year olds) are mostly nothing special (hot dog, burger, chicken or pizza).

I'm not sure you can do that. I think you have to have the dining plan for everyone on your ressie, or not at all. Unless your mom is booking separately, in which case, that might work...I'm not really sure. I'm sure that someone will chime in here and let you know about that.

Have fun and enjoy!

Yeah, my mom will be on a separate reservation.

I have to agree the longest tr I followed was about 6 months:scared1: it was labor of love :happytv: Don't think I will be doing that again. :lmao:

I started to reply here but it got to be too long. So I'm going to post a review and then I'll post a link here. (with lots of pix). Needless to say, since we ate there 3 times, we really liked it. ;)
