We just returned from our vacation, and we were very disappointed with POR. From the very first time we planned a vacation I have always wanted to stay at Dixielandings. We've stayed at ASMu, ASMo, and Pop Century. This trip we decided to upgrade to a moderate. It was between POFQ and POR. I requested to have a room in Alligator Bayou (can't remember the building) then I requested non-smoking and ground floor. I made it very clear when I made the request that the most important was the building. I realize that they are just requests, though.
When we arrived at 12:00 our room was ready, but we were put in a different building. I asked if my request was on the reservation. Ground floor and non-smoking were, but not the building
So, we looked at the map, and our options for buildings were Parterre (sp?) or a building way out in Alligator Bayou. We opted for the mansions. We were in the back corner facing POFQ. The first thing I noticed about the resort was that there was some painting chipped off around the windows. I also didn't care for the fountain. It seemed dirty. I don't know if it's because the area that holds the water is black or what, but I didn't care for it close-up. Our room was nice and nicely decorated, but it didn't seem a whole lot bigger than the rooms at the value resorts. When we thought about it we could see the difference, but we didn't really notice it. The fridge was nice to hold our one bottle of apple juice all week
Any other trip it would have been great, but we just didn't use it this trip. I did like the curtain that divided the sink area from the beds. That was great for DH. The room was clean. It was nicely themed. On our second day there we noticed a big puddle of water that we had to be very careful around (the kids did) and that puddle was in the walkway for the rest of our trip.
The grounds were nice enough. They were actually quite pretty. I loved the water and loved the boat transportation. We had one driver that talked the whole trip, and he shared quite a bit of information. It made for a very enjoyable trip. We only used the quiet pool, because the main pool didn't have laundry, and I did laundry while the family swam.
The food court was nice enough. We had to wait a LONG time for our food. Too long. I think a sitdown restaurant is faster. But, I enjoyed my food. We didn't eat at the sitdown restaurant at all, so having that there was not something we needed. We did sit one night and listen to Bob Jackson (I think that's his name). We got back to the resort and my youngest daughter was so tired and the minute she heard the music she was ready to go again. She loved all the times she got to go to the stage. We had a lot of fun with that. My DH stayed longer than I did. That was the highlight of our entire resort stay.
The refillable mugs were a waste for us. We weren't close enough that it was convenient to run over and get a refill like it has been in the past. I think we used them three times.
Bus transportation was okay for the most part. There were issues at night from MGM one night. We waited 45 minutes for a bus. That wasn't to get us on, it was to get the people in front of us on. There was one other resort that was having that same issue. Our lines went back forever. And, there were a couple morning when transportation was horrible from our resort. Those mornings there was a CM out there. Not sure if she had a large group of what, but there was one park that they couldn't get a bus for. One day it was MK. We saw four buses for AK, two for Epcot, and three for MGM before we saw one for MK. Same thing happened for Animal Kingdom another day.
I think the main reason we didn't like POR was that we just didn't think it was worth the extra money over a value resort. We don't do a lot at our resorts. We've always taken a break from the parks one day and just "hung out". We had just as much fun at the value resorts. Besides the piano player, I don't think there was one thing at our resort that we enjoyed more than the values. People complain about the noise at the values, but I noticed the noise more at POR than I ever have before. I heard showers turn on. I heard toilets flush, and I heard people in the hallways. I've never had that problem at the values, and we've always been in the middle of things.
I realize this is just my opinion, but I wanted to share. Our last day when we were leaving there was a lady in line at the store, and she said that POR is her favorite resort. She is a DVC member, and she converts her points to stay at POR. So, there are people that love that place. If anyone has any questions, I'll try to answer them.

It had to do with the change in price seasons, so it made sense to try out a moderate for those last few days, but it wasn't as great as we'd hoped. We have, however, since tried POFQ and LOVED it...mainly due to the smaller size and my son was just as thrilled with the serpent pool as he was Ole Man Island. He also liked the playgrounds at both. I think they're both nice moderates, overall, but I'm sure we'd return to POFQ or try out CBR before we'd go back to POR.
and looking foward to them.
We stayed at POR a year ago and were disappointed too. For all the reasons stated, plus the staff in the check in area were not friendly at all. They seemed even bored some of the time. The folks in the store were okay, but not what we have experienced at Pop or All Star.
I guess I'm saying that I agree with Disney's labels
