Probably if you would have taken the first mug to the store where you got it, they would have just replaced it. They do that with broken wands and other things and tend to be very good about it. I'm very surprised at the hotel's attitude, as that is not the norm when replacing items that have broken.
The room size of the RPH is actually larger than or the same size as many WDW hotels that charge more. AKL's and WL rooms are the same size and their prices are considerably higher and you can't walk to the parks or get unlimited fast passes.
Sounds like you had a really good time. I would have been ticked at the hotel's attitude as well! However, remember that unlike at Disney, the parks and the hotels are not managed by the same people. At Universal the hotels are run by Loews and the parks are run by Universal, so the hotel really can't make decisions for the parks and vice versa but the hotel should have given you better advice about the broken park merchandise. At least they could have put you in contact with the park delivery service.
