We Came, We Saw, We Ate...But Mostly We Ate! A January DxDDP Review! U/D Via Napoli!

I completely forgot that we ate a couple of snacks at Roaring Forks before we went to dinner at CA Grill. We got to the hotel around 5:30, and we were pretty hungry. Roaring Forks was literally around the corner from our room, and we wanted to pick up our refillable mugs anyway, so we decided to use a couple of snack credits.

We picked up some chili w/crackers:

And what I later found out was a no-sugar added (or maybe sugar free...can't remember exactly) cupcake:

The chili was quite good...meaty and filling. The cupcake had a marshmallow topping, white cake, and some sort of berry-mousse filling in the middle. When I ate it, it had that "fake sweetener" aftertaste that I detest, so I wasn't happy with it. DH wasn't really into it, either. Oh well. At least we burned up some snack credits...2 down, 26 to go!

Great review of CA Grill! I had really been wanting to go there, but lately the reviews have been a bit lackluster. And dining amongst antsy fireworks campers sounds like something I'd be okay skipping. Still torn...lol.

It wasn't bad, per se, but not really up to par with the other signatures either. You could always make a late reservation and enjoy the quiet once the fireworks ppl leave.

Signing on a bit late!

Better late than never ;)

Great reviews! Can't wait for more!

We decided to start our first full day off with a bang, and do two signatures in one day. Since this is our second trip in a row where we've gone to DHS on the first day, I guess that's becoming sort of a tradition. I had booked a lunch ADR for the Hollywood Brown Derby. For me, it was all about the famous Cobb Salad and Grapefruit Cake, and DH was just happy to be eating :rotfl:

Since our ADR was for 11:40am, we were there when the restaurant opened at 11:30. We actually checked in around 11:25, and we were seated just a minute or so after they opened. There was a cute opening ceremony where a little girl got to "cut the ribbon" and some of the staff threw confetti.

Our waiter, Chris, arrived at our table shortly after we were seated. He was very nice, and made a few recommendations. Again, DH ordered a soda and I ordered iced tea.

For my appetizer, of course I had the Cobb Salad:

Sorry there's no "before" picture. This is post-mixing. The salad was cold, but not crisp. I had already read another review where the OP was disappointed that the salad was kind of mushy, so I expected that. I wonder if it was historically that way, or it has something to do with the way they store the lettuce. Didn't matter to me though, since the taste was sublime. Later on, I heard a woman at another table order the Cobb, but without a few of the ingredients, and with ranch dressing on the side instead of the Cobb dressing. Thus, she didn't have it mixed for her at the table. To me, that's not even a Cobb Salad...what a waste.

DH took one of Chris' recommendations, and ordered the blue lump crab cake with potato crust:

The crab cake was sitting on a bed of slaw with mustard sauce on the plate. DH knew he wouldn't really like either of those, but he definitely liked the crab cake. It was stuffed full of fresh crab. Yes, I tasted it, and it was delicious!

I was torn about what to order for my main entree, but I didn't feel like beef, so I ordered the Duck Two Ways:

Chris told me the poached duck would come out medium, but I guess I didn't really picture it the way it turned out. I'm a dark meat kind of gal, and I always see duck and goose as rich-tasting meats that have a lot of juice and fat, and are usually cooked very well. I ate about half of it, but it wasn't doing much for me, and the couscous beneath it was pretty flavorless. The duck spring roll was slightly better, but still nothing special. It was hard to really get the flavor of the duck in it.

DH decided on the Sterling Silver Pork Chop:

It was topped with smoked gouda and apricot preserves, and the combination of all three flavors was fantastic. DH definitely got the better main course. The potato hash on the bottom was fine, but DH didn't eat much of it, and I was saving room for dessert. He finished the pork chop, though.

As I planned, I got the Grapefruit Cake:

I'm not a huge fan of cake, but I am a lover of grapefruit. The cake had a nice grapefruit flavor...not too strong, and not too light. Still, it was more cake-y than grapefruit-y, so I probably wouldn't get it again. Another note...dehydrated grapefruit is really meant to be a garnish :lmao: Take all the juice out, and it's tasteless.

DH got the cheesecake...for the life of me I can't remember what kind, and it was one of the few things I didn't take notes on. In the picture, you can see it had a seasonal fruit compote:

I think it might have been apple cheesecake, but DH remembers it tasting just like regular cheesecake with the apple topping. Of all the desserts we ate, these two probably aren't at the top of the list.

We were seated at 11:35am, and our receipt shows 12:53pm. We never felt rushed, and we were full enough to skip any snacks (except a banana I ate) before dinner.

Total OOP cost before tip? $118.62

Atmosphere? We learned that the sketches were prints made from the actual sketches that once hung in the original Brown Derby restaurant. I thought the decor was very authentic. Plus, we ate early lunch, so restaurant was fairly quiet. This is a 3.5.

Service? Chris was prompt and nice. We chatted a bit about the signature restaurants. This is a 4.

Food? The appetizers and DH's main course were pretty good, but the rest was so-so. We give this a 3.5.

Overall rating? We'd go back, and DH would definitely order the pork chop again, but I'd make different choices.

Glad to hear you had a (mostly) good meal at Brown Derby! I've always been torn about going here, but the Cobb and Grapefruit Cake keep drawing me in!

I love Cobb salad and HBD's looks like a good one! I've eaten there a couple of times but have never tried the Cobb salad. I definitely need to add that to my list to try sometime.

Thanks for your review! :thumbsup2

That darn Cobb salad gets such mixed reviews and that's why we hesitate to head there and try it.:headache: That crab cake just might make me go!!

I am subscribing.. I am going in May and alot of your reviews will be on Restaurants that I have ADR's at.. Can't wait to read more!

Those are soooo tempting! At least I got to try them both, and now I feel I'm over it :rotfl:

You're welcome! How did you resist the lure of the Cobb more than once! Definitely give it a try next time.

I'm going to follow along as well.....Man, that pork chop looks so tasty.

It was...soooo tasty!

The crab cake was a surprise. We didn't expect it to be overflowing with delicious crab meat. I think I'd even pick it over the Cobb!

Thanks! As I'm writing and reviewing my meals yet again, I am jealous of your trip in May ;)

I've been lagging a bit on the reviews, so it's time to get back to it!

Continuing along with our jam-packed first day, we tried to work off our Hollywood Brown Derby meal with a day at DHS. We didn't even have room for a snack before it was time to head to dinner at Citrico's. We weren't sure how much time we would need to get to the Grand Floridian, so we left our room over an hour early. We took the boat from WL to the CR, then the monorail to the GF. Luckily, the Disney transportation gods were with us, and we got to the GF around 8pm. Our ADR wasn't until 8:40, so we walked around to kill time.

We checked in at 8:25, and the hostess told us to take a buzzer, and that we we probably wouldn't be seated until our actual reservation time, which was fine with us. We were seated at 8:43...not bad at all.

Some not-so-focused menu shots:

Our waitress, Nancy, was very nice and we never felt forgotten. This time we decided to start off with some real drinks. I ordered a Citropolitan:

This was pretty good...not quite as strong as the Torontopolitan at Epcot, but a nice blend of flavors.

DH went with a Stella Artois, which he decided needed no picture, but look for the cameo appearance in the bread picture, and the bottom of his glass peeking out in the cheese plate picture.

Here's another shot of my cosmo, along with the bread basket:

I think there were two pieces of sourdough and two pieces of multigrain. You can see the butter up-close in my earlier drink picture. We ate a little of the bread, but it wasn't anything special. We also ordered our standard iced tea and Sprite because we only planned on having one drink each.

In what is about to become a trend, I chose the cheese plate for my appetizer:

I took a picture of the menu, in case I forgot what the cheeses were. Let me just say, I am a cheese freak...I really love all cheeses, and in my normal life, I rarely get to go to restaurants that are fancy enough to have a cheese plate, so I decided I would take advantage of it at the WDW signatures. I wasn't disappointed. The lemon ricotta was light and refreshing. The P'tit Basque was definitely a sheep's milk cheese, which gave it a distinct taste, mild but delicious. My favorite cheeses are usually extra sharp, so the Fourme d'Ambert was right up my alley. This was my first cheese plate, so I wasn't quite sure what piece of silverware to use, but I think I used my butter knife to put the cheeses on the bread with a little of the accompaniments. The honey was especially nice. Ok, enough about the cheese...I could go on forever!

DH had the seasonal soup for his appetizer, which was a butternut squash soup:

As I've mentioned before, he's a big fan of squash, so he enjoyed it. It was very creamy and thick, though. In fact, in the picture you can see it's really thick on the side of the bowl. To me, that looks a little icky, but I don't remember DH having any complaints.

I doubt he even remembers the soup, though, since he is so in love with his main course, the Braised Short Ribs:

I had a taste of this, and it was soooo good! Very tender and cooked to perfection. We did find out that neither one of us is a fan of mustard greens...very strong flavor, and nothing like mustard. Maybe they're an acquired taste?

For my main course, I had the Black Grouper with fregula pasta, clams, and rock shrimp:

This looked eerily like a dish I got at Coral Reef in December. It was good, but I wouldn't say it was any better than that Coral Reef dish. The fish was probably exactly how it should be, but I guess I just wasn't dazzled. I think DH came out better on the main courses...yet again.

I ordered hot tea again with dessert, and again it was allowed as part of the DxDDP. I can't remember what kind I tried, but it was in a press pot again, which made me happy.

DH and I both ordered the same dessert. Normally, I just can't allow that to happen, for reasons of variety, but I couldn't help it this time around. The chocolate banana torte was too much to resist:

Don't know how to describe the goodness...the chocolate banana explosiveness of delight. In fact, here's a banana dance just for this dessert  It could be the best dessert we ate.

Our receipt came at 10:14pm, so it was about an hour and a half before the end of the meal.

Total OOP cost before tip? $153.28

Atmosphere? Similar to CA Grill, except quieter, which was nice. I'd give it a 3 overall.

Service? Very good. As usual, I chatted up our server a bit about Canada (she was Canadian). Can't complain, so this is a 4.

Food? There wasn't anything bad, and some of it was really great, so this is also a 4.

Overall rating? I think we'd both really like to go back, if for no other reason than to eat that dessert again!

That  (hey that's the first time I've gotten to use that guy!) dessert does look awesome. I love desserts that are gravity-defying .

My boyfriend also has that knack for usually picking the better entree when we dine out. Your cheese plate does look yummy though!

I'm becoming quite a fan of your reviews and can't wait to see more! When are you going to WDW again?? My sister and I are going for a short trip in August and we're still trying to decide on ADRs (we have about two weeks left until we can book) and your reviews definitely help!
