Okay, Tom thinks I'm officially insane!
So I'm watching a show on the History Channel last night called "The Universe." I guess it's a series. This episode was about total solar eclipses. They made them sound like the coolest thing ever for those lucky enough to be able to see one. Apparently they happen somewhere in the world every 16 months but the next one going across the US will be August 21, 2017...and it will pass through South Carolina.
Does anyone know where I'm going with this yet?
We must plan a Disney trip!! We've always said we wanted to make the drive from NJ and this is just perfect! It's in the summer, end of August, which is a PERFECT time for WDW!
So I looked at the Google map of the "path of totality" (which is where you need to be if you want to see the complete eclipse) and I found the exact spot where the path crosses I-95, at around 1:30pm.
THEN I mapquested NJ to SC to see how long it would take to get there: 11 1/2 hours! That means, we'd have to leave the day before (or else leave at midnight, which Tom already vetoed!), spend the night in SC, hang out that morning, see the eclipse at 1:30, be on the road to WDW by 2, and be in WDW by 8pm that night.
Sounds like a plan, right?
Here's the google map of the "path of totality" in case anyone else wants to plan to see it!

Thanks for making me seem less crazy, guys!!
I think it's a brilliant plan. This is a once in a lifetime thing to be able to see and the fact that it's late summer (our favorite time to go to WDW) and crosses right over I-95? Just perfect!
When I do my August 2017 trip report, I'm going to link to this post so everyone will know it was 7 years in the making!
BTW, Tom's brother and sister-in-law are on their way to WDW right now! Probably on the ME bus to POR as we speak. I am so excited for them! This is their first trip.
Hi Nikki, I'm only on pg 43 but thought I'd let you know how much I was enjoying the report...
I'm 99% certain that I have the piano man from MK's signature from 1992 and 96, I think he signs it like a mirror image with a smily face!
Love your silver ears, glad you foud them!
The photopass pics on your AK morning were brilliant, we didn't take advantage of photopass at all...but a good excuse for another trip!
Looking forward to reading your last day and a half!![]()
What a cool idea!! I look forward to the TR.![]()
Yay! What an awesome price on those tickets - not crazy at all for jumping on that price!
Nikki do you realize you will be in WDW for the Magic Kingdom's 40th Anniversary on Oct. 1????
We are also hoping to be down there at the same time....hopefully we will see you there!![]()
We are planning on going with Tom's brother and DSIL. They just got back from their first trip and had the most amazing time! And these were the people who rolled their eyes when we talked about going again and again. Tom's brother said last night, "I came back a changed man!" How cool is that?!
Woops!! I wasn't going to do it...I don't know what came over me...
I booked our flights for our next trip!!! So irresponsible, I know...considering Tom is still unemployed and all. But we are going Sept. 28-Oct 2. We have off of school for a Jewish holiday on Thursday and Friday so I thought that was the PERFECT time for a long weekend! We can do MNSSHP AND it's the first weekend of F&W!! I can't think of a better time to go! We are going to leave Wednesday night after school, get there around 10pm so we can have a full day on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday our flight is 7:30pm.
The reason I didn't want to wait is because these dates just opened up on Continental and it was $199 round trip. That's usually what I pay for flights BUT since this is a holiday weekend, it won't be long before Continental catches on and the prices skyrocket! My sister went that Jewish holiday weekend this year and they drove because the prices were like $500 each....so it really was the smart thing to do!
Now, the flights will be paid off way in advance, then I'll book the resort and it won't be everything all at once, which is a good thing, too!
(Do you like how I rationalize my insane behavior?)
Now we just need to get Tom a job!
