We are just back from 8 magical days and nights in the parks! I hope to get this report out over the next few days. :welcome:

Here are some highlights:
- Our group was DH and myself (mid 50's) and our son and daughter (mid 20's), probably our last "core 4" trip - we are planning one for next year with their partners
- We flew from round trip JFK to MCO 8/28-9/5 - no hitches, on-time flights, despite some nerve-wracking weather on either end of travel
- We stayed at Hard Rock Hotel 8/28-8/31 booked through Dreams Unlimited Travel, shout out to our agent Eileen Smith! This was our first visit to Univeral Orlando, and I don't think (hope it's not) our last. Spoiler alert - we loved some of it and will know how to focus our time next trip. We had 3-day 2-park passes that included unlimited EP with the deluxe resort stay
- We transfered to Old Key West on 8/31, stayed in a DVC 1-bedroom Villa - first time staying in a DVC Villa as members! It was magical! (We recently purchased a resale contract at the Poly, but wanted our first stay to be at OKW since it is the original)
- We had 5 day base tickets for Disney which we also purchased through DU. We visited all the parks (MK twice) and also did dinner at Disney Springs twice
- DH and the kids took tons of pics; most of my pics are of the food and drinks! I will include lots of food porn and hopefully DH will let me use some of his pics, lol
- CROWDS WERE LOW!! Even lower than we expected!!

I will tell our story over many posts. In the meantime, feel free to ask questions!

Excited to hear about your first trip to Universal! I've been on two Universal trips in the past few years because the HP additions are just so amazing (and I'll make a plug for Volcano Bay which I think is seriously misunderstood and underrated).

I had seen some rumblings on the internet that crowds and wait times were incredibly low the last week or two, so I'm glad to hear you go to take advantage of that!

Following along!

Saturday, August 28, 2001 - Travel Day, Check-in to Hard Rock Hotel

Getting there on JetBlue.

Well, a little background. We had flight credits after all the previously cancelled trips...3 cruises and a trip to Hawaii. Dead and buried with Covid-19. Fortunately, these vacations were the only casualties to Covid-19 in our family (knock wood) (not counting our mental health, well, especially mine (did I mention I'm a nurse in a hospital in NY?)).

We knew we were going to go to Orlando this year, it was only a matter of when. I'm an RN and Peter is a firefighter, so we were fully vaccinated early in the year. But we didn't know when Emma and Joey would be eligible and able to schedule appointments. So we decided that end of summer would probably be safe. I booked the airfare using the travel bank and was able to cover most of the fare for the 4 of us, but I had to do it for our least prefered airport (well, just the most inconvenient based on JFKs less desirable proximity to our home vs. all the others). I booked in February, before JB changed their Blue Basic fares to exclude carry-ons. They changed our flights so many times and once I actually switched us to a different flight and when I did that it reverted to the new rules in their system, so they didn't show us as having free carry-ons. Long story and many hours of frustrating phone calls later, payments for checked bags and refunds, we (JB and I) finally come to agree that our fares are "grandfathered" into the old rules when Blue Basic used to allow for carry-ons. So we would only need one checked bag for the 4 of us, for things like sunscreen, trading pins, loot on the way home...

Other than all that administrative stuff, we were very impressed with JB given the current situation. I have traveled to visit family a few times since May, and have had pretty bad experiences both times, but this was efficient and seamless. Our flight was on time and we arrived in Orlando around 10:40 am. We grabbed our luggage off the carousel which was prompt, and a booked Lyft XL to HRH, which cost $40.40 plus the tip. I think we made it to the hotel by around 11:30. Check in line was short and we were all checked in by 11:45.

While I was checking in, Peter was checking out...the gift store. (Priorities, right?)

Our only pic from check-in time:
UO01.jpg

Our room wasn't ready so I left my cell phone number (I thought) and they said I'd get a welcome text and then later a text when the room was ready. I was too excited to notice that I didn't get the welcome text. We were already leaving our luggage with bell services and heading over to the parks.

A VERY surprisingly short walk later, we were there!

We know you're going to cover the food. Someone has to investigate the merch. It's a thankless job. 😂

I will weigh in with my Universal opinions on merch as we finish that part of the trip. First, the travel....

JFK is my least favorite because the Van Wyck Expressway (the major road to get there from anywhere north of it) is notoriously crowded at pretty much any time of day. I've been in wall-to-wall traffic on it in the middle of the night. But this time it was tolerable.

But the biggest surprise about travel for me was the absence of Magical Express, and how it led to a seismic change in the vacation we planned.

To be clear, Magical Express WAS available at this time. But, since it would not be available on future trip, and since this was our very first DVC trip, we thought we would try this "FIRST" as well.

In the past, I always considered ME a real part of the vacation. It's as much fun as any well-themed queue, and has always been an eagerly anticipated part of the trip, no matter how many times we have done it. Passing under the arch where the whole bus cheers is like a "our vacation has started" moment that we always loved.

But, if we were going to try this new thing, maybe it was a time to try another new thing -- Universal.

We had been leaning to including a Universal trip for some time. While D is solidly in her mid 50's, I don't think my 57 qualifies as "mid" anymore. Maybe some of the Universal rides would not be as well tolerated by my body in another 3-5 years? (More on that later.) And they're working on opening another gate soon? Waiting much longer was going to be too large a meal to appreciate in one bite.

The final deciding factor for me was hearing how little of the magic had returned to Disney since re-opening post-pandemic. If there was going to be less for me to enjoy, that made more room to try a new flavor. (So much more on that later, too.)

So, net net, Lyft was great. It was more affordable than ME, equally quick, and did not take away any of the magic of arriving at Hard Rock Hotel. But, then again, I wasn't anticipating much from that arrival. It was fine.

Saturday, August 29, 2021 - First impressions of Islands of Adventure

We were raring to go! So excited to be on vacation and finally at Universal! We decided to knock out a few big rides, so we headed into IoA with the intention of getting directly onto The Hulk. We used our EPs, though the posted wait time was about 25 minutes, and our cards didn't seem to work. We explained we had just arrived and the...employee of Universal (what do you call Universal "cast members?") let us through. We reached the top of the stairs just at the loading platform when the thunder, lightning and rain started. The ride was temporarily paused due to extreme weather. We waited a few minutes, thinking it would open quickly, but it turned out to be a longer delay, so we decided instead to go grab some lunch. We were starting to realize we were hungry, after all, as we had only had some small snacks in the airport and the JetBlue treats.

We headed back to Hogsmeade to hit up the Three Broomsticks. On our way through Seuss Landing, we almost stopped for Green Eggs and Ham, but we had concerns about whether they had gluten free offerings, so we passed through. Couldn't wait to get to Hogsmeade anyway, to tell the truth.

We made it to Hogsmeade!

We certainly were NOT disappointed in the theming of the area or of the Three Broomsticks! The line wound around outside a bit and it looked like a really long wait, but it moved quite quickly and I don't think we waited more than 10 or 15 minutes to order.

We quickly adapted to the barcode menus:
uo05.jpg

We ordered and waited a while, as Emma's has to dine gluten free and her meals are always made specially and take a little longer to be safe. Both the manager and the chef came out while we were ordering to go over what she could have and how they would keep it safe for her. We were immediately feeling comfortable and safe and very at home at Universal!

Condiments on the table included malt vinegar for the fish and chips, and there were plentiful plastic utensils available:
UO104.jpg

Emma's Spareribs Platter came covered to protect it from contamination.
UOday102.jpg

The Spareribs Platter modified for GF (no BBQ sauce):
UOday105.jpg

Joey ordered the Chicken and Ribs Platter, he enjoyed ot for the most part, but thought the chicken was a bit dry. Sorry I don't have a pic of it. Joey really liked his ribs (his had a nice sauce on top). Emma and Joey both agreed that the star of the meal was the roasted potatoes. They thought they were perfectly cooked and seasoned.

Peter ordered the Beef Pasties with Garden Salad and thought the pasties were a little bland:
UOday103.jpg

I ordered the Shepherd's Pie with Garden Salad and thought it was a little bland!
UOday104.jpg

Fortunately, as Peter and I do, we intended to do halfsies and switch plates anyway. I thought the Pasties were wonderful and unique and full of flavor, and he really enjoyed the Shepherd's Pie. So it all worked out.

Inexplicably, I don't have any pics of the Butter Beer or Frozen Butter Beer we loved. Well, you know what it looks like. Oh my, they were delicious!! I think between the 2, our unanimously preferred was the frozen. We would have Butter Beer in all of its forms over the next few days, so please stay tuned for the Butter Beer rankings!

Overall, it was a solid first lunch. I wouldn't say the quality of the food was amazing, but it was good enough and certainly filling enough to provide energy to get us through the next few gruelling theme park hours. Most important our anxiety about GF dining in Universal were pretty quickly assuaged as a result of this meal, and that was priceless!

We wanted to make our way back to the Hulk via the Velocicoaster, but the Velocicoaster was still down for the weather, so we decided to duck into Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. The line was reported to be about 45 minutes and we wanted to take our time on that line and digest anyway, so it seemed like an apprpriate time to try it out!

More to come.

Great start to the trip! Excited to hear about the rest of your first time in Universal. The HP areas are really incredible, and I've heard the Velocicoaster is fantastic.

I enjoyed the meal enough, but I was comparing this to English fare that I had IN ENGLAND. And, as we ate exclusively from Food & Wine booths in "Wallcot", I couldn't offer a direct comparison to Yorkshire or Rose & Crown this trip. But the theme and commitment by the Universal CMs? Perfect.

Saturday, August 28 continued

OMG Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey was SO GOOD!! Wow I love that ride, and thinking back, I wonder why we didn't return to this ride during the rest of the trip...I guess we had other, more pressing priorites. I can't wait to go back to UO to ride it again. Also, none of us felt sick afterward. I had heard/read that it can be nausea-inducing, especially for those prone to motion sickness like Peter and Joey, but we didn't find that to be the case, even after we had just feasted at Three Broomsticks. Full disclosure, we had all loaded up on Dramamine prophylaxis back at the Hard Rock because we were afraid of feeling sick,

Velocicoaster was still down when we exited HPFB, so we made our way around to the Hulk, which was open. Again we tried to use our EPs and again, they wouldn't scan, but the ride operator let us through. Now we were on the Hulk in about 5 minutes. Only bad thing was...we hated it! Well, not hated exactly, but, let's say we didn't enjoy any aspect of it. Joey and Peter felt downright sick after it, and Joey and Emma both described sensations of "graying out" during much of the ride. We needed to sit down and chill, have some water and a soda, so we made our way over to Seuss Landing to sit on some benches. Peter grabbed us some cokes and a large pretzel, thinking perhaps this would settle the stomach. I think maybe the early morning wake up, the travel, the big lunch and HPFJ all caught up to us when we added Hulk to the mix? We decided to do the little Suess elevated train and the Cat and the Hat ride which was super trippy and made us laugh really hard and we were slowly feeling better.

At this point it was close to 4pm and I still hadn't heard anything from HRH, not even my welcome text, and as our EPs weren't working, I was starting to think something was wrong. I texted them and told them the problem with the EPs not scanning and asked if our room was ready. They said room was ready, gave me the number (room 1140) and as for the EPs, I'd have to stop by the front desk and have them reissued. We sat in Seuss Landing and chatted about what to do next, go back to the hotel or take the Hogwart's Express to US to check out Diagon Alley, and we unanimously agreed that the room could wait, we wanted Diagon Alley!

uo04.jpg
After another round of Dramamine, we headed into Escape from Gringott's for what we agreed was the best ride of the day! Again, we never made it back on this great ride and can't wait to return another trip.

Feeling quite un-sick at this point, thanks to some rest, some carbs, loads of caffeine, and more Dramamine, we decided we wanted to check out some ice cream at Florean's. We each tried 2 flavors, and all told the flavors sampled were clotted cream, sticky toffee pudding, lavendar, earl grey, chocolate chili, apple crumble, peanut butter and strawberry. The winner was the clotted cream, a unanimous 8 thumbs up! This award for most disappointing went to the sticky toffee pudding, which just tasted like caramel with stale cake in it. The strawberry and peanut butter made a great combo, like a PB&J! We made a pact we'd come back to Florean Fortescue's each day at UO.

As we finished our ice cream, now around 5pm, we noted that there was NO line at Ollivander's Wand Shop, so we decided to go in and catch the "show." There was only one other party in there, two women who were together, which worked out nicely for us, because it set Emma up to be selected (Joey is younger but Emma is smaller so gives the appearance of being the younger sibling). So she was selected, presumably because she appeared to be the youngest of the 6 in the room.
uo06.jpg

The show was adorable, we got a nice video of it, but we didn't purchase the wand that day. We had a blast browsing the shops and finally decided to head back to HRH to rest a few minutes and freshen up for dinner. HRH is perfect for th.is kind of thing...it is SO close to the parks, walking back and forth was so easy to do at any time.

We had booked a deluxe room, because it offers 3 sleeping surfaces (Emma and Joey get along great but don't want to sleep in the same bed), so the deluxe offers an option for us all to stay in 1 room.
UOday106.jpg

UOday107.jpg

UOday108.jpg

I thought the room was spacious and efficient, but could use an update. The wall paper and carpet had seen better days. I think I might have read somewhere that these rooms are scheduled for a refresh soon, and that's great. Room 1140 is on the ground floor very close to the pool and also VERY close to the walkway to the parks on the end closer to the parks. While I might have prefered a higher floor for privacy and a room further from the pool for quiet (the pool music and activities are LOUD), the location for convenience was perfect!

Dinner was a 8:30 at Margaritaville, and we checked in a few minutes early. That place was crowded and busy and we had to wait several minutes past our reservation time, but it was great!

We had confirmed ahead of time that the Volcano Nachos were indeed gluten free and the chef had confirmed so we reminded the waiter of the special needs and he reassured us that the Nachos are alway GF. I tried to convince my family that the Nachos alone and maybe 1 or 2 other apps or entrees would probably suffice (they didn't believe me how big the nachos would be). So I don't have photos of the Cheeseburgers in Paradise (1 GF, 1 standard), Coconut Shrimp and Fish & Chips OR the Nachos, maybe because of the DRINKS! We ordered a variety of margaritas, a few Jalapeno Mangos, a Perfect and a Lemon Blueberry. All delicious...except for the Coconut Shrimp. Honestly, it tasted like coconut cake with a little shrimp in there. If you like coconut cake, this might be the dish for you, but it definitely wasn't to our liking. The Cheeseburgers in Paradise tasted like Whoppers with slightly thicker patties, so if you like a Whopper, you'd like this. The Fish and Chips were fine. The real stars were the margs and the nachos. I'd go back just for those. Drinks and Appetizer!

UOday109.jpg

uo07.jpg

We were way too full to finish our mains, much less order any dessert, though we really wanted to try the Key Lime Pie, but alas, we'd have to save that for next time. We made our way back to the HRH easily and quickly and hit the hay nice an early as it had been a long day, and we had another planned for tomorrow. Next up, our first FULL day at UO!

The HP rides were fantastic, even with a lot of movement. Part of it was that each individual movement was so connected to the story line, but part of it was also the antithesis of what made Hulk so unpalatable to us -- there was some time BETWEEN the individual moments and scenes that gave you an opportunity to digest the story and sensation.

I hope that makes sense. Hulk was just so many pieces packed into so little run that you never get a chance to process any of the movements. It's just so piled on. Kinda like when you're eating a high-priced meal that tries to justify the price by a long list of expensive ingredients ("...AND truffle oil!!!" lol). In the end, you never get to appreciate any of the individual flavors, and the sum total is just like eating many flavors of ice cream blended together. The individual ingredients lose their personalities, and the whole thing just ends up being a mess.

I have a friend who gets motion sick on rides, and when he sat on the edge of the Forbidden Journey ride vehicle he had no motion sickness. He was very excited about that! When we rode again later and he sat in the middle, he got really sick! We had also just rode Men in Black before that, which is REAALLY spinny, so he was already messed up from that, so that might have been why.

I hate Hulk, too! It made me have that graying out thing, too, which makes me anxious lol

Hmmm...I didn't think about positioning in the vehicle...I didn't notice our positions. Emma and I rode MiB later in the trip, but Peter and Joey decided to skip it. I think it's a good thing they did, based on how spinny it was. They would have been messed up like your friend, I'm sure! I had never even heard of, much less experienced, that graying out thing before! After Hulk, Emma and Joey both revealed that they had experienced before, which was news to me!

Great analogy, Hub! Also, it wasn't smooth at all. The thing it did to me was shake me around a LOT. It hurt my neck! At least too much truffle oil still tastes good, but Hulk had no redeeming qualities IMO.
