Shade seems like a fair trade off for the able bodied hoofing it so those who need the golfcarts have a shorter wait... I wonder why they skipped that. I imagine they'd have to design it with nature (wind, rain, sun, lightning) in mind but they aren't the first folk who needed to do it.
I think there's a middle ground between the pier being neutral, blending in, and over the top Disney theming that still would allow for benches and a bit of shade. Also, people are most likely going to be wearing flip flips/water shoes/something similar which do not provide a great deal of support. I can understand why people may not want to bring sneakers just for the walk on the pier.I have heard they wanted the pier to be neutral to not stand out . It isn’t supposed to be like a “hey look it’s Disney” kind of island
