I have booked a room at AKL for the end of June when my baby will be 2 months old. I have not booked airfare yet, nor have I told my two older kids. I can't decide whether I should actually go with such a young baby. I'm afraid I'll be wasting my money and sitting in the room the whole trip because of the heat. Have any of you traveled with an infant, and if so, do you have any tips? I'll also gladly take advice on whether or not to cancel the trip. We were just there in October, so don't feel too sorry for my older kids.

A friend of mine went when her daughter was 2 months old and they had a great trip. I will send her this post, so she can give you some info!

We just went a few weeks ago when my dd was 11 weeks....we also have a 12 yo and a 4 yo....

Don't regret it a bit! We had a wonderful time and I really do think the baby enjoyed being outdoors so much...

It also was a great opportunity for daddy and baby to bond while I was waiting in line for rides with the other kids.....

My Zoe is very easy tempered though....she's happy anywhere...I would never have attempted it with DD4 when she was a baby...she had colic and was miserable.....

If your baby is sweet tempered then I say GO FOR IT! It was one of our best Disney trips!

Be sure and take full advantage of the rider swaps that they offer....they are a wonderful help to parents and families traveling with a little one!!

Good Luck!!

shinedalgarno - How was the heat with the baby? My main concern is the Florida heat at the end of June and the fact that the baby has to be 6 months old to wear sunblock. The rider swap sounds great. My other two kids will love getting to ride everything twice. Did you bring the baby on any of the tame rides like Winnie the Pooh?

It was really moderate weather when we were there.....we had more of a problem when it got cold at night!!

My pediatrician said that using small amounts of Paba-free sunscreen was okay, and better than risking a sunburn......please don't take my word for it though and check with your pediatrician, as their opinion may vary...Also, I have heard of babies breaking out in horrible hives from sunscreen when they were little, so if you do it, be sure to test a small area before you leave for your trip.

We hung out in every shaded area we could find...although sometimes it was challenging to find shade.......If you have the funds, I would invest in one of those 'sunblock stroller covers'...that they sell.......we did requently drape thin baby blankets over the top two canopies of our double stroller to block sun as well....

I have heard of little clip on fans you can clip on to your stroller and run with batteries to cool your baby off.....

We missed the hottest parts of the days though by going early, leaving at around 11 and then not going back until 4 or later and staying in to the night...this REALLY helped I believe and is the reason DD didn't burn....

Hope you have a wonderful time!!!

I have gone with my son, well he wasn't 2 months old, but he was little.

The main thing would be to put sunscreen or have some type of sun protection for the little one. (check w/ your ped. first)
I found a fan that takes two AA batteries that clips on to the stroller. You just clip it on, press the button to turnit on, and cool air blows over the baby. It has a guard that encloses the blades as well, just in case a little arm or foot lifts up!
A light blanket that allows air flow would be good to to act as a shade!
Go and have fun!! :earboy2:

I plan on putting washclothes in some ice overnight then packing them in ziplocks to take to ther park for a quick cool down for little guy. I also always know where the baby station is in each park- always good for a cool down time. The only park that I think gets super hot is AK- so be sure to scout out some shaded areas as you tour. Good luck and have fun- my 2 month old spends his day sleeping and looking around right now so I would think that is a good time to go(and not too heavy to carry around) I have seen many tiny hats too.

We went when our younges was 4 months old~ and she just LOVED strolling around all day in the fresh air in her stroller. There are plenty of Baby Care centers to feed and change the baby so it really turned out to be a great experience for us!
Good luck!

We took DS#2 when he was just 7 months. It was a wonderful trip, and he is high maintance--partially due to health issues. As far as the heat goes, we live just outside Houston. Hot, hot, hot and humid from March to November--we are currently experiencing an extereme cold front, it's 84. FL weather really isn't any different (and I speak from experience). So dealing with heat is just part of our everyday life. Here are my tips:

Dress in light clothing. Light material and light colors. Don't layer--ie, skip the onsie and just put on the shortalls.

Wide brim hat. And light blanket. Not all cotton blankets are light, even those with holes. It needs to be breathable too. Keep that baby covered from the sun. I'll frequently have the baby in the front pack at that age with a LIGHT blanket covering them.

Some sunscreen should be OK. I remember when DS#1 was 5.5 months old, AAP came out and said babies under 6 months could wear sunscreen. BUT, CHECK WITH YOUR PEDI. FIRST!

I have clip on fans for the stroller. I also have a sunshade; a big breathable thing that goes over the stroller like a rain cover that has holes in it (DS4 says it doesn't block the view) and keeps out the UV rays. It also manages to keep the stroller cooler. A big blanket while baby is sleeping would also work.

Lots of liquids. Nurse/bottle feed often. I actually introduced water at 4 months with DS#2, it was 113 out (plus 100% humidity) & he just didn't want to nurse, but downed the water.

Enjoy those inside attractions during the heat of the day if you don't go back to your room for naps/swimming. That's what Hall of Presidents was made for! :teeth: Really, Buzz, Carasoul of Progress, Festival of The Lion King, and many, many other rides work wonderful for this.

That's all I can think of for now. I hope that helps.

I am going down in three weeks my DS will be 14 weeks old. Thanks to all for the great advice. I spoke to my ped, she said sunscreen is okay, first do a test on an area of skin before applying it to the whole baby. Also wash it off at the end of everyday. She rec Coppertone Waterbabies. She also said water is okay to give, just make sure it is bottled. Good luck. I will let you know how are trip goes.

Thanks for all the great advice. It sounds like a trip just might be possible. I'm taking Aidan to the pediatrician next week so I'll double check on the sunscreen.

one of our most fun trips was when our 3rd child was 7 weeks old...we did ALOT. only 2 nights out of 7 did I stay in with the baby. It was fun. go for it.......oh, about the heat........lots of people with babies live in FL.......so don't worry about it for a few days. have fun.

Another thing to consider is to possibly get your baby acclimated to the warm weather well before you go. Take frequent outdoor excursions when you are home, of course, "practicing" what you'll use for him (ie sunscreen, shade, hat, fan, shade breaks, etc.) prior to your trip and things like that.

Yes, lots of Florida babies survive the heat, but it's different to go from one climate to another - your profile doesn't indicate where you are from. Also, make sure he gets lots of liquids.

We took my eldest dd now 13yo to Hawaii when she was 3 weeks old and it worked out great.

GL!
