Water parks and non-swimmers

I think others have pretty much hit on what I was going to say already but I will share our experience here. DH doesn't swim. I don't know why, it baffles me, but whatever.

At TL the only thing he really couldn't do is Shark Reef and the wave pool. All of the tube rides, water slides, and lazy river dump you out in a pool of water no more than like 4 feet deep at the outside except for the slides that simply level out at the end and you basically juts slow down in 6 inches of water. If you grab a life jacket Shark Reef would totally be doable but I would be very careful with the wave pool.

DH had a blast at TL and can't wait to go back. Have fun!!!

This is a 6 year old zombie thread.

Thanks for resurrecting the zombie!!! I actually need this info for my upcoming trip!!! my DS9 doesn't swim well and we are planning water parks! I was going to start him in lessons at the Y (still might)..but they don't start until the beginning of May, and we are leaving the last of May!!! Relieved to know he'll be alright with most of the slides!

Hey,

I can't swim either! I went to Typhoon lagoon and was totally fine, most of the slides come out into shallow-ish water (I'm 5"1 and could touch the floor), just check the exits to see if your comfortable first.

Have they made changes to the wave pool? I was there last August. I guess it's subjective. I thought the waves were really big. Maybe, they used to be bigger.

Allison just meant that since the OP asked the question 6 years ago, they don't really need an answer anymore. ;)

Thanks, I thought I missed out on even bigger waves at TL, lol. I did not see the OP was 6 years old. How does that happen?

I've never had a swimming lesson, but I've never hesitated going into swimming pools. And the ocean/lakes.

My husband doesn't swim at all and is actually somewhat afraid of the water. This is what we do:
  • He only goes on water slides with me. This is partially because he fell off one of the tubes at the end once and wasn't expecting it. He panicked and completely forgot that he was a 5 foot 9 man in about 4 feet of water until I grabbed him by the arm and pulled him up to standing. He doesn't want to fall off and be by himself. With a child I would make going with a swimmer a rule because I have also had to pull children that fell off the raft out at the end of a water slide when they couldn't reach.
  • He will only go into the wave pool to his waist so that even with the waves it isn't over his head. Again he stays right near me.
  • He is fine in the lazy river. He hates going under the water falls though and will purposely stand and walk to avoid them. I think they are fun so he has now made it his mission to ensure I hit as many as possible while he is doing that. I think this is his favorite part.
  • He skips the biggest slides. I dont' think this is due to the not swimming just due to being afraid. Just like he wouldn't let me take him in a tube out above his head. My mom can't swim either (she was sick often as a child so she never learned) but she isn't afraid of water at all so she will let me do this (she however doesn't do water slides due to being afraid of heights)

I strongly urge that you actually observe the base of every slide. Look at how deep the water is and how the people enter the water. Determine if you think you can do it. Last year, a couple went down two different slides and entered the water near simultaneously. Neither of them could swim. Both panicked and didn't just stand up in the roughly 3.5 feet of water. The lifeguard struggled with saving them both, but handled it. I was stunned that anyone that was that afraid of the water would actually put themselves in this position.
