Hmm...best way to describe the water in LA?... Basically, if you were to take a glass to your local pool, collect some water and then drink it, you have LA tap water. It's not bad (as in, most of the time you won't get sick from it), but it will smell/taste like chlorine. When I am there, I'm happy to use it for tea/coffee or if I'm adding something like crystal light... But if I'm just having water, I drink it from a bottle.
It's safe to drink but I guess anything different to what you're used to has the potential to upset your tummy. Most people order the cases as its cheaper than buying bottled water in the parks and resorts.
You might notice a sulfur taste in the water at some of the resort's through the tap but it is not going to hurt you. The cold water at the soda distribution area has a filter on the machine and there is no sulfur taste. I guess the reason people buy cases of bottled water because it is cheaper than the parks. I drink the tap water there all the time been there 52 times and never had any problems.
The tap water in Florida is safe to drink but many people think water in other than their hometown tastes "funny"...my sister included! I always drink from water fountains, or tap water and have never had a problem.
As others have said, if you want to carry a water bottle around it is less expensive than purchasing in the park. I prefer to drink "free ice water" that I can get from the QS food locations and spend my cash on adult beverages!
I bought a Brita carbon filter bottle (just like a Bobble) at Kmart before my trip to WDW, and it was a lifesaver! The water is a bit funky tasting so I highly recommend picking up a bottle like this. I used it in Vegas and in LA too, it was the best!

These bottles are excellent. Our water at home is a bit funky too, but it tastes fine from my Brita bottle (and our Brita jug). The bottle is about $13 initially, I think, and then you can buy new filters. The filters last 3 months. Plus, it's just generally a good drink bottle and comes in pretty colours!
This is exactly why I stick with bottled water. I don't want to spend another holiday in the bathroom of my hotel room, so it's better to be safe than sorry.
