Does anyone know the difference between deep and shallow water aerobics? I am completely out of shape, so am looking for a beginner type class. Would one be better than the other? What could I expect?

Deep water aerobics is done with a floaty belt on and you can't touch the ground. Shallow water is done in the shallower water and you are in contact with the ground at all times. If you can't swim, shallow water would be better, but if you can swim and aren't afraid of the deep water, then deep water is really fun! I think I actually get a better workout there.

When I've done deep water we didn't use the belts but noodles and lots of treading water. Perhaps it was the instructors at that facility, but it was a nice change from shallow water as I felt I used more muscles. Both are good.

Begin in shallow to learn the moves and work your way up to deep water. If you start in deep water and get frustrated, you won't want to do water aerobics anymore which defeats your purpose.

I love, love, love my deep water aerobics. It is a better workout in my opinion because you aren't touching the ground. We don't use the belts. During the class we start off not using anything, then we go to a noodle and then to a type of barbells that they call bouys. People that have problems are welcome to use the belts or whatever they need. Love deep water aerobics. Everyday is a different routine.

I have attended shallow water "aquafit" classes 2-3 times/week for close to a year. I have also attended the deep water class a few times. I would definitely start with the shallow class and move your way up to the deep water classes. At our local pool, flotation belts are worn during the deep water class.

At my Y we have shallow, deepwater, and aquazumba. Ask the aquatics director for a description, and even go and observe classes, if you want, ahead of time. If you don't *fear* water, even if you can't swim well, you'll probably enjoy and get more out of deepwater. We do zumba in the shallow end, but it's more aerobic than the other shallow classes offered. All are GREAT, and I think you'll make friends as well as get fit!

Thank you all for your help. I think I'm going to try the shallow, at least for a little while. The deep really appeals to me, so I'll try it next! Thanks again!
