Ok, that should be enough to avoid spoiler hovering. ;)

The part when the store owner confronted the locksmith and the gun when off as he was holding his daughter, I was like Oh, no they didn't! I really liked the twist that the store owner's daughter bought blanks because it would've been so predictable for the little girl to die.

What did you think of the film? I liked it but it didn't live up to the hype of a "best film" for me.

FWIW, I saw nothing better in 2005. Note: I did not see Brokeback Mountain yet

That movie made my DH and me cry, sweat, smile, cuss and nearly have heart attacks. We loved it! DH knew they were blanks because he knows guns and ammo, but I was surprised. Thank goodness his daughter had brains!

I'd love to see BM, but of course it never came anywhere near me.

I didn't think it was anything special. It was ok, but it just seemed too....I don't know quite how to explain it. Definitely didn't see the Ocsar-worthiness of it.

That pretty much describes DH's and my reaction to the movie as well. Movies RARELY ever get to my DH, but he still talks about Crash.

I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain yet as I couldn't find anyone to go with me. I'm waiting for the DVD.

I loved Crash, DH hated it. I thought it was a fantastic movie, and can't wait to see it again on DVD, I'm sure there's things I missed. And I totally knew the gun had blanks. I don't know why, I just did. THANK GOD, that would have been awful if it didn't.

You should try going to movies by yourself. I love it. I just love getting my popcorn & diet coke and really emmersing myself in the movie.

ETA : How badly did I spell "emmersing" ?!?!?!?! Somebody help me.

Matt Dillon's character was a real scum of the earth, he did a great job playing him. I called the kid at the beginning being the detective's brother as soon as the mom kept asking about him, so that didn't surprise me but the young cop shooting him did. Oh and I totally thought the car was going to explode with them both in it, it surprised me they both survived. I liked that certain things I expected to happen didn't.

I haven't see Brokeback either, I have it on my Netflix waiting list.

Hey too bad we don't live closer I'd go with you, I couldn't find anyone to go with either!

He really did an excellent job. When I stop seeing the actor, and only the character, that's when you're at the top of your game! I felt the say way with Monster. Charlize was so amazing as Eilene, it was shocking. She deserved every bit of that Oscar.

Hmmm I guess I have to try going to a movie alone some time, it might be nice!

And yes I had the brother figured out from the beginning as well, but I was still shocked at what happened at the end.

I so wanted to kick Matt Dillon's character's butt. I kept asking DH what should a person do in that type of situation (since he is a police officer). He said he would kicked the cop's butt.

That movie really made me step back and think. Everyone has been stereotyped at some point in their life as well as being the one to do the stereotyping. I think it showed both sides so well.
I really want to make my 15 year old sit down long enough to watch it. In fact, I think all teens should watch it.

It's funny, but I didn't see Matt Dillon's character that way at all. A jerk...yes. A racist...yes. But in that scene where he was telling the HMO woman about all his dad had done with/for his black employees and how his dad had ended up losing everything I got a glimpse of why he was the way he was. He was bitter and jaded and let that affect his entire life.

Don't get me wrong...what he did to Thandie Newton and Terrence Howard was despicable, but the film let you see why he was the way he was. And when he had to deal with Thandie Newton in the accident I got the impression that he truly felt the ramifications of what he had done to her.

It doesn't excuse his actions, but it allows for understanding, which is IMO the first step to change. (And I agree that Matt Dillon did an excellent job in the role.)

Now, see, our impression was that she had no idea what she was doing, and she bought the blanks purely by mistake, not knowing they were blanks.

Could it be that you thought the characters were a bit over-the-top and that most of them were stereotypes in a movie that is supposed to be decrying stereotypes? That's how I felt about it. The way they intertwined the subplots was interesting. The acting was great. But the "racism" was overdone and too forced. Most racism is much more subtle than shown in that movie.

I don't think it was Oscar worthy, but compared to what it was against, I can see why it won.

Thank you - that's exactly what DH and I felt about it. Maybe it's because of our ages, but we both felt we had seen so many other movies dealing with racism that had much more impact (can anything ever top To Kill a Mockingbird on this subject?). It seemed very forced, over the top and extremely predictable. But, we did think that Matt Dillon, Terrence Howard and Thandie Newton were standouts in the cast. It also could be that we saw it recently after hearing SO much about it. Maybe if I'd seen it earlier without having heard anything about it, I would have liked it more?

i never heard of it, and netflix but it on my recommedtions so i added it and we liked it we gave it two thumbs up

LOL! Same here!! I was squirming and yelling at the TV through the whole movie. My husband just rolled his eyes at me. He didn't really care for the movie- he's more of a sci-fi fan and less of the hardore "think about it" movies.

By the way, where in Georgia are you?

i played the final Dillon/Newton scene over about 3-4 times. it was just so powerful.
