Hi Everyone,

We are looking into going to Washington DC on vacation in August for a week.

What are your recommendations for somewhere to stay?

The one thing I do now is that I want it to be near the subway (Metro?) but I am not sure what would be a good safe place.....

Thanks :)

PS - any other recomendations for restaurants, places to see etc. are welcome!

We went last summer for the first time. After tons of research, I chose to stay at the Residence Inn Arlington Courthouse. I'm a single mother with 2 young children and since it was just the 3 of us, safety and being close to the metro were top priorities for us. That Residence Inn is a short walk through a well-lit courtyard to the subway entrance. That courtyard does have a movie theater, several restaurants and several shops as well. Within walking distance is as a CVS, Wendy's, Cheesecake Factory, and Whole Foods grocery store. The hotel has a kitchen and we made some meals there. They serve a free hot breakfast every morning and also serve a free dinner on certain nights. You'll LOVE Washington, DC. We stayed for a week and are already planning another trip there just to go see the things we didn't have time for. I hope this helped a little; if you have any further questions, I'd love to help ya.

We go to D.C. one long weekend per year and have stayed several places near metro stops. However, we have found that the best place is the L'enfant Plaza Hotel that is one block from the mall directly in line with the Natural History Museum. There is also a metro stop under the building but you won't need it to go to the mall since you can just walk there.

We had been able to get a decent rates there. The good thing is that since we could walk to the mall, we could leave the sites and take an afternoon rest and then go back in the evening without wasting a lot of time/money traveling on the metro. Washington DC is really, really hot in August! The downside is parking is really expensive. We are willing to pay the extra for the convenience.

One year we were lucky enough to get a room at the Omni Shoreham for $79 a night -- but you had to pay for parking. Another year we got a great deal at Embassy Suites in Tysons Corner -- they have a shuttle to take you back & forth to the metro station and we just metro'd everywhere we went. Embassy gives you a free breakfast -- its all suites so you can be in a separate area from the kids and every night they had a 'managers reception' with free drinks and snacks -- they had chili cheese nachos and a veggie platter -- it was dinner for us for a couple nights.....unlimited food & drinks from I believe 5-7pm. It was great!!!
