Washington DC - need hotel ideas?

I am looking into taking my DS (9yo) to DC for a long weekend in May. Can anyone suggest a hotel that would be in a convenient location to the sites and safe for just me and my DS? We have never been to DC before and he dying to go.

The best hotel in D.C. is the Grand Hyatt. Its right in the middle of everything, and it has a metro stop right in the hotel. I'd especially recommend it for a single mom travelling with children. While D.C. is a pretty safe town, there are some parts that can get very desolate after dark. This is a city that pretty much shuts down at night.

Last trip, I stayed at the Holiday Inn Capitol (550 C Street S.W., one block from the Air and Space Museum). It was very convenient, nice, safe, and near a metro stop.
