I posted this earlier and I cannot find it..............

My DS (23) and 3 of his friends are heading from Buffalo to Washington DC to see the Sabres vs. Capitals in a few weeks. They are staying at the Hyatt Capital Hill. It appears that the Verizon Arena is within walking distance (about 1/2 mile) from the hotel.

Can someone give us some input on parking in the area? It's $33 plus tax to park at the hotel. Is there any place else in that area they can leave their car safely. They will be walking or busing it everywhere.

Any good places to eat in that general area for four young guys? Nothing fancy, just finger foods and beer.

They are also looking for some "must see or do" ideas for that area. They will be arriving in Washington late morning and I think it's an early afternoon game. They'll spend the night in DC before heading to Philly the next morning to catch the next Sabres game there before heading home.

Can anyone recommend anything? Thanks.

I don't drive, so I cannot give you much advice about parking. Parking in the vicinity of the Verizon Center is tight and DC is notorious for thefts from cars.

There are several restaurants in close proximity to Verizon Center. They include Clyde's, Hooters, and Ruby Tuesdays, all of which are within two blocks of Verizon Center on 7th Street. A few blocks further, but within easy walking distance, is ESPN Zone on 12th Street. Chinatown, featuring several Chinese restaurants, is also in the vicinity of Verizon Center.

As for "must see" attractions, I recommend a walk on the National Mall.

Hope this helps.

They can park at Union Station:

Parking
There are 1500 parking spaces available at this station. The cost for parking is $5.00 for up to 1 hour, $8.00 for 1 - 2 hours, $10.00 for 2 - 4 hours, $12.00 for 4 - 5 hours, $14.00 for 5 - 12 hours and $16.00 for 12 - 24 hours. For parking information, please call Allright parking at (202) 898-1950. Allright Parking accepts cash, Visa, Master Card and American Express cards.

I don't know for sure if these are the current rates, they may have gone up a little but would definitely be cheaper than the Hyatt if the Hyatt is $33 a day.

Parking in that area is very difficult and expensive. The metro is also a good way to get around Washington.

Union Station is also a Metro station and it is pretty easy to get just about anywhere in Washington from there. It is probably less than a 10 minute walk from Union Station to the Hyatt.

I wouldn't recommend walkling from the Verizon Center to the Hyatt at night.

Parking is expensive all over Washington. Park at the hotel and bit the bullet. Much safer to have it in the hotel parking lot than at the train station.

My family stayed there last summer - the hotel is in a pretty good location for getting around. There is a parking lot across the street, but I have no idea of the rates - we flew & only rented a car for a couple of days to drive to Monticello.

There are plenty of things to see and do - the Metro is connected to the basement of the hotel. They should see the sites at the National Mall. There is a Hard Rock Cafe between the hotel & the Verizon Center - plenty of other eateries. The hotel had a small place for burgers in the evening - sports bar themed, as well as a breakfast spot. Just around the corner was a little sandwich shop that was good - Cozi, I think.

The International Spy Museum was interesting - the guys might like that. The highlight of our trip was a tour of the Capitol building with a young intern from our Congresman's office. If they have a few spare hours, that would be well worth the time. Call for an appointment.

.....with the poster who said, "don't walk". DON'T. :scared1:
