I praise the Washington Capitals for lobbying the NHL to discontinue selling their "Sniper" cap. In hockey terms, sniper refers to a teams best shooter on the ice. With the recent turmoil in the DC and VA area the Caps have sent word to the NHL to take this cap off the market. I think it's a gesture that needs applauding. No need to market this, even though the context was brought on before the tradgedies that have occured in the past few weeks.

I have always been a fan of theirs and for an organization to do this makes me even more inclined to root for them.

I totally stupid idea!!!!! Must have come from a liberal mind that somehow stopping the sale of a cap that isnt related at all to the incidents/shootings in the area will have any affect on anything at all. Should we maybe ban the word sniper?? Would that make everything better??? When their are important things to worry about to bring this up just shows that some people have too much time on their heads or a total inability to see the forest from the trees!!!!
I think the Capitals need to worry much more about the product they put on the ice than the sale of a hat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I don't know. It seems a little ultra-PC to me. Not that I don't feel horrible for everyone living under those circumstances and for the victims... It just seems a little much.
It's almost like when people were lobbying to have the name of "The Two Towers" (the second 'Fellowship of the Rings' movie) changed because of the World Trade Center attacks. That just seemed outright stupid. The book was written 60 years ago.
Or when people thought the group Anthrax should change their name in the wake of the anthrax attacks last fall.
If it was up to me, I'd say don't worry so much about the name of a style of hat - just look for the day they catch that *******.

So if they get rid of the hat or change its name will it have ANY EFFECT on the victims of save another victims life????

I respect your opinion, it's not quite the same as making money off the tradgedies here, but the term sniper is a very sensitive subject in the vicinity of the shootings. The thing the team wants to do is to take their teams logo off the sniper hats not ban them altogether, I didn't clarify that.

It's very tense around here and the team was showing it's concern to it's fanbase, nothing more.

I, for one, applaud them. Sometimes free speech gets in the way of common sense and common courtesy. Keep safe Brent!

The NHL teams are far and wide. What may be sensitive in one area of North America is not necessarily sensitive in another. Simply not selling this article in the sensitive area should suffice.

People ALWAYS over-react as they are doing in this situation and the country as a whole has done since 9/11. So now a hat is so insensitive it should be banned, whats next!!
As a aside Its not like the DC area is immune to crime or murders!!! Its not looked upon as badly when the killings are gang or drug related as alot are in that communtiy and from what i have read the area has had on average 21 murders a month this year. The murders are tragic and hopefully the killer should will be found soon but once this killer is caught the rest of the murders will go on with little notice from the national press.
And im glad our founding fathers didnt make a pc exception to free speech!!

So Bob if this were happening in say... WI then it would be ok, since the murder rate up there is smaller per capita?

AJB-The thing is none of it should be acceptable but the reality is if one drug thug kills another in a lousy neighborhood society in general doesnt care as long as it isnt in my neighborhood. But once the killings involve famous people or in a high-income neighborhood or is done in a horrific manner it gets little attention from the majority of society. It shouldnt be acceptable anywhere. If you had one gang kill members of another gang in the manner that the sniper is doing in a lousy neighborhood it would get a little attention in the local paper but not country wide coverage as it does happen often.
