Smelled something burning in the laundry room....
Checked it out and it appears that my washing machine is dead....

It is almost 10 years old and it had been leaking oil for a while(slowly) and so now has come the time for a new one....

Any recommendations??

We want to try and stay under $400...
Thanks in advance...I am checking out the whirlpool models...

Kenmore.

Period.

(can ya tell I just LOVE Kenmore appliances?)

Advice-don't tell Believe this is her Christmas present. And don't tell Mandy this is her birthday present.:teeth:

Your thread title brings up an interesting (at least to me) question:

Why do people call washers "washing machines" and yet they don't ever refer to dryers as "drying machines"?

I have a front loading washer that tumbles the clothes, instead of a top loader with an agitater. I think it's much easier on the clothes (less wear and tear) and it uses less water. I don't know if there's one like this in your price range but I will never go back to a top load with agitater again!!

Shep, do you have any scratch and dent, or outlet stores where you are? You can get some great deals there. I've got a great dryer for $300 because it had a dent in the top. It's in my basement, no one sees it and I didn't care. lol

Well, I would not give up on a l0 yo washer. Sounds like the belt just went. We are just replacing our 25 yo w/d (Kenmore) with another Kenmore that has similar features.

We like Sears Kenmore and you get a decent washer for around $400.

herc.

Never had any problems with my kenmore.

And, I pass on my kids clothes to my friends kid and always get compliments on their condition and lack of stains. It is 7 years old and I am perfectly happy.

Although, I have heard some realllllly nice things about the front loaders!

Another Kenmore user here.
First one lasted 25 years, second is now 5.......

Kenmore for me too....

But you may want to check on service... may be able to be repaired... also check out the Sears Black Fridy sale.

We bought a Kenmore a couple of years ago and love it. Our old Kenmore lasted 22 years through many, many loads of cloth diapers. The salesman told us that alot of the Kenmore models are made by Whirlpool. Good luck.

Ours are Maytag ... ya know, the lonely repairman? ;) They are almost 10 years old, so far.

I want to get the Whirlpool but you people have me leaning towards the Kenmore...ugh...The Kenmore had all this stuff on it I didn't need and was $90 more....but had free shipping...
I will decide tomorrow and let you guys know..
I guess it will help out who will deliver quicker too..

Shep,

I've had my Whirlpool washer & dryer for 19 years. I heard Sears contracts out to different companies to make Kenmore's now, so there's no telling who actually makes the machine.

2 things to point out.

Yes, Whirlpool and Kenmore are "made by the same company"...Kenmore is the Sears brand....

The major difference in Kenmore and Whirlpool washer's are the drums. Kenmore has a VERY deep drum, while Whirlpool has a larger circumfrence...

As my appliances die, they are being replaced with Kenmore. The only one left is the dishwasher....I have NEVER had a problem with my kenmore washer/dryer/fridge/stove, gas grill, etc.... I find them to be top quality througout.

Also just made a post about sears/kenmore....

I seen your other thread...That's pretty cool..
I will check out Sear's & see what they have...
One of my problems is gonna be finding my color...
We have almond...
Oh well..
time to go..

Thanks for all the advice..:D

Why do people call washers "washing machines" and yet they don't ever refer to dryers as "drying machines"?
It could be because washers can mean more than one thing, like the washer that goes with the nut and bolt;) I really don't know why we say that, but thought I would take a shot.

Shep is out shopping now. Not sure if it is a good thing since he is more of a spender than I am....but atleast I get out of doing the shopping:p

Well, if shep's already shopping, it probably is too late to chime in, but I'd agree with the poster who said call the repairman....a similiar thing happened to my 10 year old washer....drum stopped turning and there was a 'burny' smell.....called the repair guy and it cost $40 to have a certain doo-hickey replaced. Washer works as well as ever now, and it saved me some $! :) Good luck whatever you decide!
