Was you labor induced? Tell me about it.

My second pregnancy was induced at 10 days past due date b/c of high blood pressure. The pitocin was started at 1:00 p.m. and DD was delivered at 11:30 p.m. This labor/delivery was much more difficult than my first DD even though the total hours in labor were shorter. They ended up stopping the pitocin once the contractions became regular because they were so intense. The baby shifted position and was breech. (I had an ultrasound that morning at the doctor's office and she was head down) They had to do the fetal blood testing where they prick her scalp while she was in utero to check her oxygen level because the heart rate kept dropping if I turned onto my left side. At one point, they almost decided to do an emergency c-section because they could not get the heart rate back up. I did deliver ******lly and it turns out the cord was wrapped around her neck. She was healthy, thank goodness, but it was scary for awhile. I don't know how much of any of this had to do with the pitocin, but I don't think I would choose to be induced unless absolutely necessary.

I was induced with both of my children because of high blood pressure. The first was born 14 days early and the second 15 days early. With both of my kids, they put me on a drug called "Cervadil" (I think I spelled that right) which gets your cervix moving in the right direction. With Baby #1, they said to my husband, "Go home and get some sleep and come back at 7:30 and we will give her some Pit to get her started and you can have a baby by early afternoon. WRONG!! The Cervadil was all I needed, I called DH at 4:00 to have him come back to the hospital and Baby #1 was born by 8:30. I didn't need the Pit at all.

With Baby #2, I also went in the night before and had the Cervadil, and by the next morning things were moving right along. (This time I also made my DS stay the night with me just in case.) My doctor broke my water for him, and I don't remember if I went on Pit or not. If I did, it didn't cause any lasting memories because I don't remember being on it. Baby #2 was born by 12:30.

I loved several things about being induced. First of all, since my doctor told me to come in the night before there was no guessing about false labor or being sent home, no calling someone in the middle of the night to come and watch my kids so we can go to the hospital. I was early enough that both of my babies were not too big, (one was 7 pounds, the other 6 lbs. 7 ounces). I am due in July and will probably be induced again due to the high blood pressure. It really has it's benefits!!

All three of mine have been scheduled inductions. The first one was awful, but only because DD got stuck, which I doubt was related to the induction. The second one was fast, they actually shut the pitocin drip off onec my water broke because things were going faster than they wanted at that point it didn't change the frequency or intensity of my contractions, and they still had to rush in to deliver him quickly. The third one wasn't quite as fast, but it started at around 7 a.m. and I was done by noon. This one is scheduled to be induced on the 25th, but I have been experiencing a lot of early labor symptoms and am hoping maybe this last baby will be the one I go into labor on my own with-I'm not one to ask for prayers or PD that often, but wouldn't complain if some were sent my way for that. :D

4 of my 5 pregnancies were induced...my water was broke. I was over the due date for each one and had started to dialate so the doc went ahead with it. Since my first pregnancy, the only one that wasn't induced had gone fast (4 hours), they figured it would be best for me to already be at the hospital (we lived a half hour away from the hospital so that was a consideration too). My other 4 labors only lasted 1-2 hours. All 5 babies were fine and healthy!
As others have stated, it was nice to know when you were going in as far as finding someone to be there with the other children. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a safe delivery and a very healthy baby!!

MelessaG...thoughts, prayers and PD coming your way too!!

Thanks for all the great replies! It probably is too soon for me to be thinking seriously about this--I still have 7 weeks left until my due date. But, because my doc brought this up at my last appt, it's been going through my mind.

I did think that my first baby was too big, but am even more concerned that my doctor thought he was too big. I'm glad to know that at least I won't be going late. I'm not in favor of doing an early induction for "convenience". But, I am glad to know that I have the option, to prevent another large baby.

I still have several more weeks to go and several more OB appts in which to check for progress. I won't be very willing to induce if I'm not dilating or effacing. So, I guess I'll just see how it goes in the next coming weeks. Although, it's kind of scary to think that I could have my baby in 4 weeks. I'm sure it will be longer though. I guess no Fourth of July baby for me. :smooth:

MelessaG, Good Luck to you!!! Sounds like your little one is coming very soon. I hope everything goes well for you!!!

I was induced on my due date. I checked in around 5 am and the nurse came and checked to see how dialated'/effaced I was before they hooked me up to the Pitocin. I was about 5 cm dialated and around 75% effaced when they hooked me up.They also broke my waters about 30 min after the Pitocin was started because they hadn't broken by themselves and that's when I did start have some really strong back labor. Now some people say the Pitocin will make contractions come hard and fast and I really didn't find that to be true. YMMV, of course. I let the contractions go on about 4 hrs before I asked for th epidural, which made labor so much easier. :) Epidurals are a godsend if they are done right. :)

my 2nd and 3rd were both induced so I wouldn't go over dates (my 1st was a c-section) the back labor was the worst and would have happened whether they were induced or not. Both boys came out sunny side up:sunny: they were 7-15 and 8-1. my DD(the section) was only 6-10:crazy:

I am the opposite of most of these replies DD#1 was induced and compared to labor with DD#2 I would run a marathon to get everything going before being induced again, and I stayed home in labor with DD#2 until I was 7cm. It was the back labor was the worst and it may have helped if I had a nurse who checked me more often to see about the epidural. I was induced around 5pm and had her 3 minutes before midnight.

Had one induced, one not.....I much preferred the "natural" labor.
Ditto.

With my second daughter my doctor induced me. I was 9 days past my due date and had been having mild labor for 2 weeks. I was 4cm dialated. It was HORRIBLE. I hated it. Pitocin is the worst stuff ever (IMO).

If I was to ever have another baby (not very likely at this point) I would do anything to avoid being induced again.

My water broke on its own with all 3 babies, but labor wasn't progressing fast enough with the first two. I was determined to be drug-free, so the first labor with pitocin was a killer. I had awful "back labor" and could not get comfortable. It also took a good 2 hours to push! Same with the 2nd baby, but I felt the contractions in my belly...not a great deal of improvement! With baby #3, I got to the hospital just 30 minutes before my son was born, so no pitocin was necesary! :)

That is another concern also. With my first I had 7-1/2 hours of labor at home. If I'm induced the whole thing would be at the hospital. Of course, with an active 3 year old, I just may want to be at the hospital the whole time.

Water started leaking at 3am wen to hospital, after walking up and down the hall for a few hours they decided to induce, 3 bags of Pictocin and 14 hours later DS was born.

I don't remember it being that bad, I think I blocked all of the pain because I honestly don't remember, I do hop this one decides to come on his own though!!

I was induced at 36 weeks 3 days due to pregnancy iduced hypertension. This was my fourth baby and honestly the pain was worse but I was induced at 1:oo pm and he was born at 3:20 pm. Very quick delivery. I wish you the very best and I know most will agree that whatever way you choose there will be pain and it's all worth it in the end!
