Was there gonna be a cartoon series of Moana being made for Disney+?

I heard that there were plans to make a cartoon series of Moana and the name of the cartoon was Moana The Series and it was gonna be on Disney+. But for some reason it was planned to air in 2022 but it never saw the light of day and it makes me wonder why they are making Moana 2 instead of finally premiering Moana The Series? Because when Moana The Series was announced in 2021 along with the Tiana animated series Moana The Series was gonna be a talked about series but there has been no news on Moana The Series and it makes me think that Moana 2 is both the pilot episode and the second episode of Moana The Series put together like The Return Of Jafar was the pilot episode of Aladdin The Series in 1994?

This is actually true. They repurposed it into Moana 2 after strategy changes for Disney+ and theatrical. My understanding though is that the movie is somewhat retooled and not jsut the first couple of episodes strung together, though there could be a lot of similarities.

I wonder why Disney decided to do this with Moana rather than have Moana The Series? My guess is possibly to save money and they thought Moana 2 would become a moneymaker when it makes it's debut in theaters Wednesday

Well, not so much to "save money" as the theatrical release probably cost MORE, but the potential revenue is also higher. A lot of shows released to D+ were going under the radar and not making the service profitable. Big movies are a better way to go.
