Was anyone else surprised

We had read the book so we were not caught offguard but we still cried!

we rented it last weekend. My 12 yr old daughter read it and while watching it she says to my 8 yr old ds - you know she dies in the end -
typical 12 yr old

he and I still cried - actually it stuck with him for days. sensitive middle child. He had a lot of questions - why would they kill a kid? she's the main character why would they kill her> you name it, he had a 100 questions and wanted to talk it out

How do you read the book to your students and not cry?! Was AnnaSophia "Samantha"?

I've always warned my students that I will tear up at the part when the character dies. I always have to take a deep breath. My first year of teaching I had a girl who had to leave the room because she was crying so hard. It's a book on our 5th grade curriculum list so I always read it. We have 2 other books about death on our list, A Taste of Blackberries and On My Honor.

Anna Sophia was indeed Samantha. Her hair is much shorter and now blonder in the movie. She's also in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

There was a terrific interview with Katherine Paterson, the author of Bridge to Terabithia, on the Disney Insider right before the movie went into theaters. It is based on her son's experiences and he was the one who really pushed for it to be made into a movie.

For those who have read the book and only seen the trailers, there is not much fantasy in the movie, maybe 10 minutes tops. It does keep very true to the book though some things are left out of the movie, but nothing major.

We were VERY disappointed that they felt the need to curse (repeatedly) in a children's movie. I normally check out online reviews of movies before the kids watch but I let this one slip in. I was glad we just rented it and did not waste our money purchasing it.
