WARNING about trading teleporters and need help!

I am sure most of you know this since I am newer than a lot of you...but I didn't see a thread on this and maybe some new people or younger people could get jacked on trading teleporters, so this is a notice for those who don't know (tell your kids!) Also maybe someone can enlighten me on a good way to trade teleporters with someone you do not know/trust.

Even though I'm new, I'm older and pretty smart about things, and I didn't think I would get taken in a trade. But alas, I did, because I didn't even think someone trading teleporters would give me two that didn't go together and run off with my diver's helmet. Maybe an accident, maybe no. It's confusing when you have more than one set of the same kind, to know which ones match.

The guy gave me 4 Stitch teleporters for my helmet, and I never tested them b/c they are too big and I realized I would never use them. So I put them up for trade, and finally got a taker for one set. I tried to trade a set to her and accidentally gave her 2 that didn't match. Luckily, she found me and we went into my room to test and figure out which ones went together. Two did, which I gave her, and two didn't, which I have stuck in my inventory that I can't do anything with. :rolleyes:

Since trading/placing items and putting them back in your inventory makes them move around (in your inventory), how in the world do you know which ones go together? I know, you can test them out. But what is a good way to recieve teleporters in a trade and know that they match? Someone could show you that they do, but how do you know that when they take them away and trade them to you, that they are the same ones they showed you? If you end up with non-matching teleporters and the person is not on your friend list and runs away, you are stuck. You can be friends with a teleporter trader first, but if they are just sticking you with non-matching ones they got stuck with on purpose, they might just kick you off their list and disappear.

I wish VMK could come up with some kind of number matching system for the 'porters so we don't get confused, but for now, for me and everyone else who is kinda new at this, does anyone have thoughts/ideas on a good way NOT to get jacked on this type of trade?

There is no sure way that you can guarantee not getting cheated, but below are the steps I would take.
1) If you are trading teleporters make sure to test them before the trade. Besides preventing honest mistakes, it means you have to be in the person's room and can get their character name and the room's name from the room description. You also can see if any fan sites are mentioned in the room description. Write it all down beforehand as you could get booted from the room right after the trade.
2) Ask the person to make you a friend before the trade. This gives you another way to note the character name and you can look at their character description for any fan site mentions. If they aren't quick to delete you from their friends list it is also a good way to follow and report them after a bad trade.
3) Make sure to have them tell you or agree to what they are trading you and what you are expected to trade them for it on VMK. This gives the VMK monitors something to look at when the trade terms are not met.
4) Only trade with someone you trust. For me that would mean a person that is on and posts frequently to a VMK fan site (any of the major ones). If the trade goes bad you can always ask them via the site to make it right. If they don't you can also post on the site that they would not fix a bad trade.
5) After you are sure that the trade is bad (teleporters do not work or item is still missing after logoff and then logon) - report the bad trade in as much detail as possible to VMK. The detail should include the person's and your character's names, the location the trade happened in (including instance if you are in a common area), the date and time, what the terms of the trade were, and why these terms were not met.
 
I'm so sorry this happened to you. Drives me crazy how many greedy dishonest people there are hanging out in the wonderful world of disney.

One thing I figure out to do is use a trade between. Find a CL that both people know and trust, and both give your items to them for testing. Then the CL distributes the items to the opposite people. The CL would have to be extremely trustworthy - obvious problem is the CL runs off with the goods. There are some very nice and very well known CL's, who knows maybe you and the stranger you're trading with both know the person.

They really should come up with a better way for us to tell teleporters apart that are in our "on person" inventory. I hate getting two or three sets and then having to sort them out in a guest room somewhere. Some of the larger teleporters are extremely hard to use (going to the ? spot doesn't necessarily get you on your way). Sorry if this is turning into a rant, but you'd think it would be something they addressed by now....?
 
Thanks for the tips, guys! i found a thread after I posted this about the "lost teleporters" room or something, where people can put their lonely teleporters. Anyone know if that room is still in action? I will look for it when VMK is open. I also need to make friends with some CL's! Maybe some CLs on here can be my friend? :) I realized I don't have any on my friend list. Also, this is off topic, but I really wanna be a CL....anyone know how long you have to be a VMK player before you can apply?

I am not sure if there is an exact time length, you just have to know a lot about vmk. I know that I got community leader earlier than some people. However, I don't think they are taking any new community leaders right now. But I can be your friend. LOL. Just come find me while I am on. My guest room nsme is Spooky Memories (you can also do a seacrh for the player if he/she is in his/her own room. I probably won't be on tonight, but pm if you want to meet somewhere.
 
not that its a guarentee but I always ask people to drop the teleporters in their room and let me try them. of course they can still get you but at least in this case it would rule out an accident.

When I am trading them to someone I have them set up in the room and dont have any other teleporters in my inventory. Then I have them walk through before I pick them up and trade them.

My son's been burnt twice in teleporter trades. You'd think he'd learn his lesson and stop trading for them. He now does the same thing and asks for a demonstration of the teleporters. Once someone traded him 5 teleporters. Only 2 of the 5 worked.
 
This happened to my daughter. I sent a note to VMK requesting that they detail - when trading a teleporter (a popup advises you) - that they are "Connected" or "Not Connected" when you are in a trade. That way you do not need to test - since the system should be able to identify that in a trade.

Let's hope they take my advice and implement it. I am sure it would save alot of people from disappointment. Based on my comment, my daughter received a working set of teleporters.
 
It's worth suggesting -- after scores of people suggested the trade confirmation window, that was finally implemented.

Miakoda, do not think that only CL's are trustworthy. In fact, I've seen some CL's initiate bad trades for the other person, but none on this board! So what I'm saying is, don't give CL's carte blanche just because they have the initials. There is no guarantee they are really trustworthy. Instead, use your judgement and experience. Any person will do as a go between as long as you trust them.
I am not a CL and have no desire to be one, but I will be happy to help you if you ask.
 
Miakoda, you don't have to worry about me being untrustworthly LOL. To be honest I can hardly believe that there are people out there who do take things, from little kids even. I don't know what sick mind some of these people have when they scam another player, but you can always trust a dis lol. Everyone on these boards are so kind and helpful, if you need help on vmk just ask a dis!! LOL
 
Keep in mind that if you do get a mismatched pair of teleporters in a trade, Disney won't do anything about it. I got a bum pair from someone, and Disney ignored my numerous attempts to contact them via the VMK web site.

This is my suggestion.

Put symbols by each teleporter indicating that the one that matches is a pair. People trading can see that and that would help prevent bad trades.
 
Also, even if you don't know a CL, you can always ask CLs you hear of (that seem to be known in the community) or more veteran guests (also known in the community) to help you in a third party trade. I have done this many times, even when I don't know one or both guests in question. If you are going to do this, don't hesitate to ask other members (via PM) if they think the CL or guest acting as intermediary is reliable. Just don't start asking if open forum. I for one would hate to read that, "Gee, CL_TinkerBlue is such a stinker". Even if I am, I'd rather guests heard that in private.
 
what a bummer. i am so sorry to hear that. :( have you put it down to see where it goes? or does it just not go anywhere? i mean you can always ask the person whos room you teleported to what the deal was. LOL!

you can always trust me in a trade (as you already know) but i myself am always (well not always... but frequently when i don;t really know them at all.) weary of trading. i don't do it very much with people i'm not semi familiar with. i'm always worried something will go wrong. <sigh>

but i want to try and be a CL. they said they were not accepting applications until like dec 1st or something like that.
 
Well, I don't think I will be taking anyone's teleporters in a trade anymore (except for my mules! LOL). I just was wondering if anyone had come up with a way to tell which ones matched. I am going to email VMK and make a suggestion to identify matching porters too, maybe if enuf ppl do it they will listen...

I would be willing to be your friend, but I can be hard to find on VMK since I'm very seldom in my rooms. If you ever see me on VMK just ask.

When they first started accepting applications it was 30 days before they would even let you apply. Even then sometimes after the application was sent a reply would say spend more time on-line. The last I have heard they are not accepting any more applications till at least December 1st. I have been told by a couple of VMKs that this is because they have a large number of applications to work though.
 
When I buy transporters that I'm not using right away, I drop them into one of spare Rock Skull rooms right next to each other and not keep them in my inventory. Right now I have 1 transportter in my inventory I want to put in the DIS teleporter newtwork, the other is in my main room already. But I don't know who to give the matched one to.
 
I also use spare Skull Rock rooms for teleporter storage. That way I always know which ones match. If you have more than one pair of the same kind simply use another room.
