Walk up to Kona? Anyone had success?

I have tried to get an ADR for Kona, but was too late! We would love to go over and have a Pina CoLava and eat at Kona before the MVMCP on Dec 14. I was thinking of heading over around 3, get a drink and hope for a walk up with and reasonable (1 hour) wait. We have 4 adults and 2 kids. Am I dreaming????

Has anyone had luck with a walk up to Kona and will they turn you away? Back up plan is Captain Cooks. Ehh, ok as long as I mama gets her Pina CoLava!

Any ideas or suggestions from all you experts would be great! Either way, we are at Disney and we will be happy!

A few years ago, DH and I walked in to the Kona and got seated within a few minutes. It was December 12, I think, or right around then, but there were only two of us, and it was later in the evening. I think your best bet for getting seated is to go during off-times, so in your case, your idea of getting there at 3:00 and being willing to wait a bit might result in your getting seated. And if not, then you should know right then and could still do quick service at any of the monorail resorts. My personal recommendation is for Gasparilla's at Grand Floridian. We just love their Italian sandwich, and it is usually not crowded. Good luck!

Have only had success walking up for breakfast. Dinners are pretty popular there!!

I've never had trouble walking up at Kona for lunch. I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to get in at 3pm, but I guess stranger things have happened.

I think your plan is great. Give it a try, and if it doesn't work, get your drink at Tambu and go on with your night!

Unless things have changed at Kona they are open at 5:00pm not at 3:00pm we go there every time we go to Disney both for breakfast and for dinner.
We have been able to get in without and adr a few times but have had a long wait.

This is our favorite place to eat and is where we go the first night of every trip. We will be there this Sat. evening. Other people on the boards have said they got a Pinacolava at other places thougg if that is what you want.

Oh good points everyone! I looked and the hours for Kona are until 2:45 and 5:00 - 10:00. So much for showing up at 3 (i guess it would have been at least a 2 hour wait, he he)! I got an ADR for 2:00 (not available yesterday). We will see what the hubbie thinks!

You can but they usually have ADRs every now and then.

I walked right in for lunch in May of 2009. It is much easier to walk into restaurants than the boards tend to indicate. The time of year, the restaurant, and the time of day all play a factor but on the vast majority of my trips I make maybe one or two ADRs and manage to eat at almost every TS restaurant I want.

Of course trying to walk into Le Cellier at 5:00pm on a Saturday around Christmas won't get you far but it's easier to walk up to restaurants than you'd think.

We hvae done walk up for Kona many times and always been seated fairly quickly. My only hesitation would be the fact that it's a Christmas party night so I don't know if that would throw things off. One time, the concierge at WL told us they were not accepting reservations cause they were full (at Kona.) but we decided to give it a shot and ended up getting seated right away.

We have never had a problem being seated at Kona and we are always walk-ups. I have had to wait around 45 min, but the Tambu lounge makes the time pass quickly.

Kona is typical super easy to walk up to. We just had lunch about 2 weeks ago without an ADR. If you have a smartphone the new mobile Disney Dining site makes it super easy to see what restaurants have availability. We visit about weekly during the cooler months and I've been using the mobile site every time we go. I am shocked at the restaurants I've been able to get same day ADRs for.
