We have decided to take a trip 12/14-12/20. OKW (2 bedroom) is where we prefer to stay and there are only three nights available (17th - 19th) so we would have to waitlist the 14th -16th. We are having to borrow points from next year as we have already been this year and I am nervous about not getting those first nights. SSR has the 15th -19th but not the 14th right now.

Do I make my reservations at SSR for 15 and 16, and OKW for 17-19 and waitlist the full time at each resort then take what is available? Is it likely that we would get the nights we want at either resort? Do I only borrow the points we will definitely have a reservation for and the fill in if the waitlist comes through?

You may need to plan on a split stay since you are booking so late. Book the alternate nights you don't have and get the wrong nights cancelled with the waitlist coming through. Or use one waitlist to get that one night at SSR.

It would be great if you could have three waitlists! If I were in your shoes, I'd book the available SSR and OKW rooms and set up two waitlists for the remaining days. As a backup, you might want to make a hotel reservation for the 14th. They can be canceled 5 days out without penalty if your waitlist comes through.

Also, if you get the SSR days, that same day you can put the entire trip at OKW on waitlist - you never know. :)

I like this idea also, but don't want to "borrow" points I won't end up using since they can not be un-borrowed. Will DVC allow me to do that without losing the points in my 2020 use year?

You don't need to borrow points to waitlist. When you set up the request, you dictate where you want the points taken from - but that transaction doesn't happen until the resort is available. if your new reservation takes the place of an existing one, you will use the points you previously allotted for the initial reservation. You might have some other options, too. I suggest calling member services and seeing what they recommend. If you get someone with a lot of experience, he or she may be able to share a strategy or two - and then set it up before you even hang up the phone!

Good luck!

When you waitlist there is an option presented that you have to give permission to borrow the points if the waitlist comes through. If you borrow, this transaction becomes final. If for some reason that reservation needs to be canceled, and you wanted to defer it till the next use year. those borrowed points cannot be banked.

Call the regular reservation system number and see if you can pay for a missing night in the same room you will be in using your points. DVC rooms are available for cash rental. If your points reservation comes through cancel the paid reservation. If not at least you have the dates you want. Not cheap though.
