Waitlist Question

I am a new DVC member, we bought last month, and we are planning for a trip later in Dec. We are planning to book at our home resort SSR now, but would like to try for somehting else like Animal Kingdom or Boardwalk. I was curious if they will allow me to jump on a wait list now, or do I have to wait until 7 months out.
