I have a question about the following scenario:

A member wants 3 nights in a DVC studio. 2 nights are available, but one is not. The member takes a 1BR for the last night and waitlists for the studio for that night.

At checkin, apparently a studio is available and the member is put in the studio for the last night.

This lowers the points needed for the stay by 16 points.

Should those points then go into holding? And if so, then is it unwise to waitlist past 31 days if it would lower your point total for the stay??

I thought it was correct that they should be in holding, since it was within the 31 days, but I figured I would ask with all the glitches that seem to be happening recently.

Yes, they would be in holding, but your scenario isn't likely to happen that way. You would have to make the changes through MS and not at the front desk.

Actually, this did happen to us. I booked a stay for one of my sister's girlfriends last month. The point adjustments were all done on the day of checkin.

It is possible the waitlist came through that day for whatever reason and MS did the change, all she said was they told her at the front desk she had the studio for her whole stay. She had asked about moving, since I had told her that was what would happen, and they said "you don't have to, you are booked into the studio for all 3 nights."

I didn't call MS and ask about it.....I always ask here first!! ;)

So to downsize a room by waitlist...it doesn't make much sense to stay on the waitlist after 31 days, since the excess points will be in holding if it comes through, and unless you could use them, they would be wasted anyway. Might as well enjoy the bigger room.

We will probably be able to use the points, and I planned them for her anyway, so if we can't, no big deal, but good info for the future just in case. :thumbsup2

Thank you!

I've always assumed this is why the wait list "goes away" at 31 days and you have to put yourself back on it at that point. That way, it is a conscious decision to risk points going into holding if a less expensive room becomes available during that 31-day period.

I haven't come into this situation yet , but I could see giving up the points to stay in a studio the whole time , because I HATE moving rooms especially just for one night.

I hope I never have to give up points though!

Ditto!

Technically you should likely lose the additional points as the rules are written because it's a cancellation and rebooking and a cancellation on the day of check in is a loss of all points. But this is an area where some flexibility is reasonable and I would expect DVC would likely give one the additional points in a holding account though that's the most you can ask for.

I was surprised they were there at all.....a cancellation within 7 days of checkin should be a loss of points, right?

So I kind of received a bonus! :)

I guess I could count it as a dream, since I DO have a dream that all the points I use magically reappear in my account the next day. ;)

If you cancel on your check-in day you forfeit the points. If you cancel between 30 days and 1 day prior to check in, the points go into the holding account.

A cancelation the day prior would go into holding and on the day of arrival would be a loss of all points. Any part of the reservation is counted from day one so if you cancelled a day at the end on arrival, you'd still lose the points. It didn't used to be quite as strict, I THINK it was loss of one day if you cancelled on the day of arrival. Maybe someone else knows the old rules in that regard better. But I'm not surprised they were flexible, I think it's reasonable in this situation and does make sense. One could argue if they had it at check in you should have been able to get it sooner so it would not have been an issue.
