Waitlist and banking/borrowing

Okay, I have a question about waitlisting in regards to banking points. I'll try to ask this in a way that doesn't give you a headache!

We are planning to have a Sept. UY because we always travel in October. What would we do if we wanted to go to HH or VB in the summer, but ended up on a waitlist? The waitlist may not come through until well after our 8 month banking period. How do people handle this?

I guess the same could go for our October visits. I would book at AKV at 11 months out and then try the entire reservation at the 7 month mark. If the waitlist comes through after the 8 month window and the points are less than AKV what happens in this situation? I don't want to lose points because I didn't plan correctly.

Bank the current UY points and waitlist with the provision that should it come through you borrow from the following UY in the August booking. As for October as that is the beginning of your UY no problem if you don;t go as still ahve a fait few months in which to bank. Don't forget that the key word is USE not when you make the booking, the points are relevant only to the dates they will be used.

Okay, so I don't have to have points "tied up" with the waitlist? I can bank whatever 07 points I might have left and if the waitlist comes through I can ask MS to use 08 points? Am I understanding this? I was afraid I would have to use my 07 points to book that and I wouldn't be able to bank them because they would be "tied up" with a waitlisted reservation.

I swear I make things more confusing than they have to be!

You could have a problem if:

1. you book AKV at 11 months and
2. try to switch to VB at 7 months and have to waitlist for VB AND
3. the VB stay costs less points than the AKV vacation.

If the waitlist comes through after your banking deadline, the "extra" points will be returned to your account. If you are past your banking deadline, the points will expire at the end of your use year. You would have to use them for something, transfer them to another member or rent a reservation to avoid losing them.

The totally "safe" thing to do would be to cancel the VB waitlist and just stay at AKV if the waitlist didn't come through before your banking deadline.

Okay, that's what I was afraid might happen. I probably won't do much with waitlist until I get used to working with the points.

I now see why having two different contracts with different UY may not be a bad idea.
