Wait to make reservations?

I sometimes get the feeling I'm not getting the best rates by booking so far in advance for our October trip.

I'm thinking of waiting until 60 days out to take advantage of better rates. I'm not worried about availability (hopefully) and I think this would both be better from rates and having to front $1k for over 1/2 a year.

Does anyone else wait till they are this close? Any tips? Ever try this at WBC? Our strategy is to wait to check WBC availability at the 60 day mark and if that doesn't work fall back to WH (which was a ghost town during our trip this past year during this time).

I like your strategy.

We book way out for most travel if we are going prime time, but 60 days out off season is fine with me. We'll even book a refundable place even if its a few bucks more to try and score a last minute deal at a price or upgrade that's worth taking the risk.
