My computer went crazy today and wouldn't open AOL.. Kept giving me a message that I had to reinstall the program..

Well - considering I was still running 5.0 I decided to upgrade to 8.0.. Not a good idea.. Although it did grab my favorites and save them it reeked havoc with my computer.. Kept freezing up like crazy and the only way I could get out was Ctr/Alt/Delete..
After having to do that several times I decided that there was probably too much junk in the 8.0 program, so I reinstalled the 5.0 instead..

Well the 5.0 is running okay (no freezing up) but ALL of my favorites are gone! Hundreds of them!! :( So now I have to try to find them all again - many of which I'll probably never find again..

It's days like this that I really hate my computer.. Grrrrrrrrr...

I know how you feel. Last week my hard drive crashed and I had to get a new one installed. I lost EVERYTHING!

You and I can have a pity party together if you'd like. Table for 2 please!

Maybe all the kind folks here on the DIS could just keep posting links to different things for us and we can save the ones we like! :teeth:

I sympathize. We lost our hard drive in January and I lost 250 music downloads. Now I am unable to load up a decent site to replace them (win mx says I don't have a tcb port?, morpheus was slow and messed some other things up, imesh has popups.). I also lost my burning program so I am way behind!
Don't forget allears.net --Deb's site

How about reinstalling 8, mail yourself all the lins by tossing them into an email, and then ininstall and go back to 5?

Also, a couple of things, when things start going "funny". Back up everything, a hard drive crash might not be far away. Also, before you do anything, when things start to go crazy, do a "go back". Sometimes it's something small you might have done (added new programs, etc), and the "go back" will reset it.

One last thing..if you have someone you trust with your password and they have a later version aol..have them sign you in (or you go to their house and sign yourself in) and get your old favorites that way...and again, mail the links to yourself.

yI think our favorites should actually be stored on your hard drive and shouldn't be lost because you changed versions of AOL

In the newer versions, they are stored on AOL's harddrive...that way you can get to them no matter where you are using a computer..or whose computer you are using. In the older versions they are stored on your hdd, but under a quirky aol folder. If you lose your aol, you lose your fav's (in the older versions). You can save them to a disk, but you have to wade through a couple of aol's folders to find them. I think it was version 6 or 7, that put in a save button right a tthe bottom of the fav places, and made it much easier for those older versions. But C.Ann, is using a really old version.

AOL STINKS!! So why do I still have it? If you don't like 8.0, C.Ann, don't ever switch to 9.0. A friend of mine was telling me that ever so often it just deletes some files of hers out of the blue. I know there's a limit to the number of days it will keep mail in your inbox, but that's pretty scary. I've learned to save the stuff I really want into Word. I copy it and save it there.

Within the past week AOL somehow deleted all my files I created for my mail! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! So the files are gone as well as all the mail I had in there! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

that bites..you think they'd have it save to both places..

the more I learn about AOL the more I wonder why anyone would use it..
