I just got back from a stay at VWL.
The boat dock at the MK wasn't far at all. We had stayed for the second performance of Spectromagic. We had to hustle to get the last boat which was leaving at 11:45. (We were watching the parade in Frontierland.) We were the last ones on the boat. They were running a separate boat for Ft. Wilderness guests, but we usually shared transportation with them.
The VWL/WL does have a bus that goes to the Ticket and Transportation center, but we did not want to deal with that.
Getting to the VWL from the dock isn't bad. It may have taken 5 minutes to get to our room.
As for getting to Epcot, MGM and Downtown, be prepared. Not only did the bus seem to take forever to get to the WL/VWL, we then had to go to Ft. Wilderness to pick up those guests.
Meanwhile, as I mentioned, they have a bus that goes to and from the TTC, and another bus that goes back and forth from the WL to Ft. Wilderness. There's also a boat that goes to and from the Contemporary. We regretted not taking the latter and taking the monorail from there.
That was our one complaint. We were less than thrilled with the bus transportation. We usually stay at OKW and it seemed that it took twice as long to get anywhere than what we're used to.
