during beginning of August - it's on my 22- year old's daughter's list of places she would like to visit. Any interesting places not to miss, good restaurants, etc?

Thanks.

My DH grew up in Oregon & has taken me a few times to visit. I don't know how far out of town you want to venture, but here are the places throughout Oregon that I enjoyed:

Oregon Dunes (dune-buggy riding is the BOMB)
Sea Lion Cave
Mt. Hood & Timberline Lodge (You can ride the ski lift even if you don't ski. Very cool.)
Mt. St. Helen
Crater Lake

I'm sure folks who live in that area could tell you more detail about places to eat & such...these are just my picks for sightseeing.

Saturday Market is one of my favorite activities
Powell Book Store
The Pearle District
The shops in and around Pioneer Sq. are fun

Portland is full of "neighborhoods" that have cafe's, shops and restaurants.

I love McMennimins Brewery - they are in unique locations (Former school, former mortuary and a former elks lodge out in Forest Grove to name just a few). Grab a snack, a Ruby Pale Ale and watch a movie in one of the locations with a theatre....great way to spend an afternoon

The original Ole Spaghetti Factory is in Portland.

OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) has an IMAX theatre that is a lot of fun. My DS at 19 still loves the museum part. I was just there for the DaVinci Exhibit and it was amazing.

Tulips Bakery in St. Johns has some wonderful deserts and pastries. Grab a coffee, a desert and walk out onto the St. Johns Bridge. It is beautiful. Drive down under the bridge and observe the cathedral shapes of the supports from the park.

The coast is about 2 hours away.

I have been told Multnomah Falls is not to be missed.

If I were going to Portland as a first timer, I'd probably spend one day exploring the city (waterfront, downtown, rose gardens, etc.), one or two days on a trip to Cannon Beach, and one day driving part of the Columbia Gorge (Multnomah Falls, etc.)

It's a great city and you could spend days exploring it, but for me the Oregon Coast is just too great to miss.
